Borderlands 3 gets dark and scary thanks to this new mod.

It’s called the Borderlands 3 Limbo mod, so named after the 2010 puzzle platformer that did a great job of using black and white shadows to scare the ever-loving crap out of you. It manages to impart the same terrifying otherworldliness of Limbo without taking too much out of the gameplay.

The mod is pretty simple actually--all it does is remove the colors, environmental effects, and HUD, and replaces it with just the black and white shading. It’s all just shades of grayscale, which can make the game a lot more difficult as enemies are all just silhouettes without depth or even an outline of their bodies.

There are a few other things that are missing. Without the environmental effects, explosions, splashes, and other flashy AOE stuff just don’t appear, so you have no idea if someone is shooting rockets or grenades at you. Without a HUD, you have no idea how many bullets you have in your magazine, your current action skill cooldown time, or even your health.

Luckily, the mod can be toggled on or off in-game so you can flip it on when you want to fight in an eerie purgatory but then flip it off when you actually want to look at some of the loot that just dropped.

You can get the Limbo mod over on Nexus Mods. You’ll need to download a third-party program called reshade from https://reshade.me/ and then follow the instructions on Nexus Mods to install the mod.

It’s also not perfect. Apparently, Eden-6 just doesn’t work at all. Mod creator Yeti is currently looking into the issue, but it should work on every other planet.

Borderlands 3 is still a very new game so the current roster of mods available is very small. Borderlands 2 eventually had quite the list of available mods that changed almost every aspect of the game, including a wildly popular “unofficial community patch” mod that fixed various bugs that Gearbox just never got around to patching. You can bet with the popularity of Borderlands 3 that a similar community of modders is likely to spring up.
