The King of the Koopas has finally made his way into the first entry in the Super Smash Bros. series, as an update to the Smash Remix mod has added Bowser to the game.

The roster of the original Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 was filled with heroes, but that wasn't always the case. Masahiro Sakurai had planned for Bowser and King Dedede to be playable in the first Smash Bros., and development was started on both of them, but they were cut and didn't make it into the final version of the game. Bowser was eventually added in Melee, and King Dedede was added in Brawl.

Smash Rexmi is a popular mod for the original Super Smash Bros. that has been adding characters from the later entries in the series. This includes Ganondorf, Falco, Lucas, Wario, Dr. Mario, Dark Samus, and Young Link. A new update has been released for Smash Remix, as advertised in a new trailer on its YouTube channel. The new update adds Bowser as a playable character to the game, along with some new stages, new bonus modes, and 12 character battles.

Bowser plays in the same way as his counterpart in later entries in the Super Smash Bros. series. The Smash Remix version of Bowser can hide in his shell and strike the enemy, perform multiple swipes to keep enemies off the edge of the stage, breathe fire and use it as a projectile, slam into the stage with his big lizard backside, and perform his diving suicide grab.

The early Super Smash Bros. games were marred by tight development cycles, which led to characters being cut partway through development. Bowser would have been a natural fit for the original Smash Bros. game, but it wasn't meant to be. Fortunately, the Smash Remix mod has finally given the King of Koopas the chance to wreak even more havoc in the 64-bit era.
