Weather plays a pivotal role in Breath of the Wild. Part of The Legend of Zelda’s reinvention saw Hyrule become a more livable and cohesive world. Breath of the Wild’s reinterpretation of the Zelda universe is rooted in reality without losing the franchise’s inherent charm. More importantly, Breath of the Wild’s many changes ultimately make gameplay more compelling – fundamentally influencing how audiences play Zelda.

To scale Death Mountain and survive Breath of the Wild’s harshest heat, players need to buy and upgrade the full Flamebreaker Set. While the set can be purchased in Goron City for a hefty sum of Rupees (3,300 altogether), the Flamebreaker armor is downright essential for exploring Breath of the Wild’s Eldin region.

Updated June 25, 2023, by Sean Murray: The Flamebreaker Armor set is still a very convenient thing to have in Breath of the wild, so we've refreshed this guide with breakout tips and improved formatting for greater readability.

Flamebreaker Helm

Flamebreaker Helm

Like the rest of the set, the Flamebreaker Helm can be purchased at the Ripped and Shredded armor shop in Goron City. To fully upgrade the Flamebreaker Helm, you need the following materials:

  • 4 Fireproof Lizards
  • 2 Moblin Horns
  • 4 Moblin Fangs
  • 3 Moblin Guts
  • 8 Smotherwing Butterflies
  • 2 Hinox Guts

Fireproof Lizards can be found in abundance at Eldin’s Southern Mine, Moblin Horns and Fangs are dropped by most Moblins, Moblin Guts are dropped by blue-tier Moblins at the minimum, Smotherwing Butterflies can be found all around Eldin Canyon, and Hinox Guts are a common drop when killing a Hinox.

When fully upgraded, the Flamebreaker Helm has an armor rating of 20.

The Flamebreaker Helm is the single most expensive piece in the set (2,000 Rupees), so it might be wise to purchase it after obtaining the Flamebreaker Armor and Boots.

Flamebreaker Armor

Flamebreaker Armor

Curiously, the Flamebreaker Armor can be obtained through a side quest as well as being purchasable in Ripped and Shredded. For those who want to buy the Flamebreaker Armor in Goron City, the piece costs a total of 600 Rupees.

Otherwise, the Armor can be obtained by completing Fireproof Lizard Roundup in the Southern Mine. Simply trade Kima 10 Fireproof Lizards for the Flamebreaker Armor. Like the Helm, the Armor requires the following items to upgrade:

  • 4 Fireproof Lizards
  • 2 Moblin Horns
  • 4 Moblin Fangs
  • 3 Moblin Guts
  • 8 Smotherwing Butterflies
  • 2 Hinox Guts

When fully upgraded, the Flamebreaker Armor also has an armor rating of 20.

Since the Flamebreaker Armor is the only piece that can be obtained outside of Goron City, it’s essential that players complete Kima’s side quest if they want to explore Eldin without needing to rely on Fireproof Elixirs.

Flamebreaker Boots

Flamebreaker Boots

The Flamebreaker Boots are the last piece of the set and cost a total of 700 Rupees at Ripped and Shredded. When all three pieces are equipped and have been sufficiently upgraded, Link gains complete fire resistance (this doesn’t apply to heat, however, which is a separate weather element present in the likes of Gerudo Desert).

Like the other pieces of the set, the Flamebreaker Boots require the same materials to upgrade:

  • 4 Fireproof Lizards
  • 2 Moblin Horns
  • 4 Moblin Fangs
  • 3 Moblin Guts
  • 8 Smotherwing Butterflies
  • 2 Hinox Guts

In total, you’ll need 12 Fireproof Lizards (22 if you want the Armor from Kima), 6 Moblin Horns, 12 Moblin Fangs, 9 Moblin Guts, 24 Smotherwing Butterflies, and 6 Hinox Guts to fully upgrade the Flamebreaker set.

The Flamebreaker Boots have an armor rating of 20, giving the complete set a total defense rating of 60 – which isn’t super high for Breath of the Wild’s endgame, but it’s nothing to scoff at either.
