Just uncovering the Master Sword isn’t enough – Link actually needs enough Hearts to survive a stream of damage. Only then can the Hero of the Wild reclaim the sword of the heroes before him. Here's how you can make your way through the mysterious Lost Woods and get your hands on this legendary weapon.

Updated on April 5, 2023 by Rebecca Phillips: While the Master Sword isn't necessary for completing Breath of the Wild by any means, it's iconic for a reason, and a weapon that you'll want in your arsenal. It's the only weapon that doesn't truly break, and you'll need it if you want to take on the gruelling Trial of the Sword. To help you find the legendary blade with ease, we've updated this guide.

Where To Find The Master Sword

Botw Map

The Master Sword is located in Korok Forest, which is found in the Lost Woods. These woods are situated deep within the Great Hyrule Forest, north of Hyrule Castle, in the Woodland region of Hyrule.

The closest tower is Woodland Tower — head north up the path from there.

The Minishi Woods lead directly into the Great Hyrule Forest, which can be accessed from the Eldin Region, Lanayru Wetlands, or Central Hyrule.

All three regions have walking trails that inevitably lead into the Lost Woods.

Once Link enters the Forest, he’ll transition to the Lost Woods where you’ll need to navigate him through the fog.

How To Get Through The Lost Woods

Lost Woods

When you enter the Lost Woods, you'll see lit lanterns lighting the way. Look closely, and you'll notice the wind blowing the flames, pointing you in the right direction.

After you follow these for a while, the lanterns will end. Grab the torch leaning against one of the lanterns, and light it on the fire. Just like with the lanterns, the wind will push the flames into a specific direction. Follow the flame's direction through the woods.

If you go in the wrong direction, the spirits of the Lost Woods will grab Link and return him to the start.

Link will eventually stumble into the center of Lost Woods, where he’ll come face to face with Koroks, the Great Deku Tree, and the legendary Master Sword.

How To Obtain The Master Sword

Master Sword

Once you reach Korok Forest, you'll see a cutscene, and the Master Sword will be in its pedestal ahead of you. You'll need at least 13 full Heart Containers to pull out the Master Sword.

Temporary (yellow) hearts do not count. If you don't have enough hearts, you will get a Game Over.

The Master Sword drains Link’s health during the pulling process. So long as you have 13 Hearts, however, Link will survive unscathed and be able to add the Master Sword to his equipment.

To get the Master Sword as soon as possible, complete at least 40 Shrines without spending any Spirit Orbs on Stamina.
