Bungie just released a new trailer for Destiny 2's upcoming expansion, The Witch Queen, due out in February. This latest trailer is a sort of investigation board, with strings leading to every major plot point of the past several seasons and asking questions like "how" and "why."

It mostly uses previously released footage and images to create the crime board, but there's at least one piece of art that seems to have come from a non-Bungie source.

As noted by Twitter uzer Zyron, there's a lot of similarity between the image of Xivu Arath, the Hive god of war, and a fan-made image created by Mal E just over a year ago.

Although the images aren't exactly the same, there's certainly enough similarity to be suspicious. When asked by Forbes whether or not he believed Bungie stole his image, Mal E said he doesn't really think of the new trailer as art theft.

“I don’t think it’s any foul play at all, 100% some kind of crazy mistake," said Mal. "I’m absolutely not claiming any theft of design, my art is referenced from the illustrated grimoire’s section on the Book of Sorrows and the sisters, which is one of my favorites! I just wanted to try my hand at drawing my vision of her face but facing forward.”

Bungie has yet to comment on the trailer, but Redditors are postulating that Mal's image being included was actually a production mistake. It was likely that the official Bungie art team was supposed to provide something to replace Mal's fan-art before the trailer went live, but they never got around to it. The marketing team didn't realize what they had was actually a piece of fan art and just posted the trailer anyway.

It seems like Mal is fine with his art being used for official Bungie marketing, but it would be nice for Bungie to at least credit the artist.

In other Destiny news, Trials of Osiris wraps today with the first-ever Trials lab. There were slightly fewer players than last week, but overall it seems that players enjoyed the new Control-oriented Trials matches. I know I did.
