As a further reminder that nothing you buy digitally is truly yours, everyone who paid to buy Tetris from Electronic Arts on iOS and Android will no longer be able to play it come April 21.

According to an announcement on the game's store page, the $1.99 game — which has been around since 2011 — will not only be retired and removed from the app store, but will also no longer work on devices it's installed on.

"We have had an amazing journey with you so far but sadly, it is time to say goodbye," the announcement said, going on to detail the game's coming demise before going on to say "We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of this game and we appreciate your ongoing support."

It won't just be the premium version that will be removed from the store — the free-to-play version and the social game Tetris Blitz also have the same message.

The blame for losing an already-purchased game doesn't fall entirely on EA's shoulders, however, as they never owned the rights to Tetris, they only licensed the rights from The Tetris Company.

The rights to mobile Tetris games has been licensed to a new company, N3TWORK, the company working on the upcoming Tetris Royale.

This is far from the first time that mobile games have disappeared from the app store, never to be seen again — the infamous Flappy Bird is probably the most-notable example. Nor is it the first time that old games have been made unplayable — EA themselves have cut off support for plenty of games in their time, including Mass Effect: InfiltratorDead Space, and Burnout Crash.

The fact that games can be completely lost to time is not exclusive to mobile platforms, but it does seem to be far more commonplace. So keep in mind the next time you want to put down some money for a game on your phone: It's only yours for as long as the publisher lets you keep it.
