For the past week, rumors have run rampant surrounding the possibility of a remastered version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, thanks to a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One listing for the game appearing on Amazon Italy with a price tag of €19.99 euros. The listing has since been removed, but according to source-materials provided to charlieINTEL, the rumors appear to be true. Eurogamer also backed up charlieINTEL’s claims that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is indeed in the works.

The remastered title, originally released in 2009, is believed to include a remastered version of the game’s story-based campaign only, with multiplayer rumored to be excluded from the remastering process completely.

Activision has declined all requests for comment regarding the hype surrounding the rumors and has not yet officially announced anything. Though nothing official has been confirmed, the evidence that has come out thus far certainly supports the case that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is actually happening.

Besides the Amazon Italy listing - which was possibly posted as a placeholder awaiting an official announcement; a way in which upcoming game titles tend to be handled by online retailers - support channels from other retailers such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart have responded to customer questions related to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered specifically. Some, including Amazon and Wal-Mart, even went so far as to divulge pre-order date information in the chat support communication. Granted, the pre-order start dates provided were inconsistent, ranging from March 23rd to March 26th, both in 2018, with a rumored release date of April 30th. However, especially with the dates being close enough in proximity, any indication of a pre-order date would provide solid assumptions that the game and official announcement are on the way.

The Amazon Italy listed price of the game would be a reasonable amount as well (though, maybe a bit steep for campaign-only content), considering that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered standalone cost roughly twice that amount when it was released in late-2016, and contained both campaign and multiplayer elements.

While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s campaign was one for the ages, including the “No Russian” level - arguably one of the most controversial levels in gaming history - a remaster that excludes multiplayer could potentially be a significant miss for Activision and may ultimately result in lackluster sales for a game and franchise that has thrived on its multiplayer element.
