With last week’s announcement that Sony will be supporting cross-play compatibility for the PlayStation 4, everyone is eager to learn what upcoming games may be in store for cross-platform play. Naturally, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – one of the next major titles to be released – is one of the games that players are hoping supports cross-console play.
While Activision has not confirmed anything official yet, they did provide a statement to IGN in response to the community outreach, hinting that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 cross-play might actually happen.

“We’ve had a great experience with cross-play for Hearthstone on other platforms and have witnessed how compelling it can be for our community. There’s still a lot of work to do on both our side and the platform side to understand whether cross-play might be integrated into our other games, so we’ll be watching the upcoming test and will assess what the potential impact of this feature would be for our players and our games.”
Sony kicked off the beta test of its cross-play feature last week with Fortnite – a game that has already been successful as a cross-console title – and according to Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios Chairman, Shawn Layden, it’s been "so far, so good."
"I haven't heard any feedback about disruptions,” Layden said on the PlayStation Blogcast. “It's a beta test, so we expect maybe there will be some hiccups along the way. But we'll watch that carefully. We're just delighted people are out there getting what they want and not tweeting me so much."
Assuming the beta test goes well, there are few reasons to expect other games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 not making the jump to cross-play.
Activision’s statement regarding Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 cross-play is vague enough to keep Activision covered if the functionality doesn’t happen, but also allows for the interpretation that it could eventually become a reality. Honestly, if it doesn’t happen, it would be a major missed opportunity, especially considering the success of last month’s beta test for Call of Duty Black Ops 4’s battle royale mode, Blackout.
We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 cross-play, but hopes are certainly high. The anticipated title comes out on October 12th, and will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
