The 65th Grammy Awards will be the first ever to honor the "best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media," a new award that "recognizes excellence in score soundtrack albums comprised predominately of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released within the qualification period."

Which is a lot of words to say that the Grammy’s is handing out awards to game soundtracks, and nd we just got our first set of five nominees. Those are:

  • Aliens: Fireteam Elite, by Austin Wintory
  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn Of Ragnarök, by Stephanie Economou
  • Call Of Duty: Vanguard, by Bear McCreary
  • Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy, by Richard Jacques
  • Old World, by Christopher Tin

The general vibe you’re going to get from all of these albums is emotional background music to shoot, slash, and sometimes manage the goings-on of your proto civilizations. They’re certainly moody and very appropriate to each of their games, but I dunno if they’re something I’d put on my headphones to be the soundtrack of my morning job. Well, maybe Aliens: Fireteam Elite, but it’d be a very frantic, desperate jog.

We should note that the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack is the instrumental stuff by Richard Jacques and not the rock album by Star-Lord Band comprised of Steve Szczepkowski and Yohann Boudreault. Frankly, they should have been nominated for best rock album.

Although this is the first official award dedicated to games, this isn’t the first time the Grammy’s have awarded an artist for contributing music to a video game. Just this year, "Meta Knight’s Revenge" from Kirby and the Forgotten Land won the award for best arrangement, instrumental, or acapella version of a song. And back in 2011, Civilization 4's Baba Yetu won the award for best instrumental arrangement accompanying vocalist.

The 65th Grammy Awards will be celebrated on February 5 in Los Angeles, with the winners to be broadcast live.
