Modern Warfare is set to make Call of Duty history by being the first installment in the franchise to support cross-play.

Call of Duty debuted for the world back in late October of 2003. The series originally focused on the World War II era for its first three games before jumping forward to modern times with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Following the annual release model, the series has seen its fair share of ups and downs, but is widely considered one of the pioneers of modern first person shooter video games. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 set the standard for what an FPS game can be from both a story perspective and at the multi-player level. Despite all the franchise's success, cross play has never been integrated. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will continue the tradition of breaking ground in the series and pave the way for the future of cross-play.

Video Games and Cross-Play

There are only three games that support full cross-play between all the systems they are available on; Fortnite, Dauntlessand Rocket LeagueA longer lists consists of games that are supported by cross-play with specific systems such as Xbox and PC or PC and PS4. Modern Warfare is revolutionary in it will be the first FPS to support full cross-play, marking another step forward in the evolution of video games and the way we play them. There is something rather exciting about being able to pop in Call of Duty on my Xbox and wait for my buddy to start up his PS4 so we can play multi-player together. Everyone has different tastes when it comes to video game systems, and cross-play enables us all to connect with more people than we ever thought possible.

What About Keyboard And Mouse?

Is this entirely positive news for the gaming community? There are concerns raised over playing on console vs. PC and using a controller vs. keyboard and mouse, but is that necessarily the case? Supposedly, you will be able to choose if you want to be matched against a player with a keyboard and mouse, and will have the ability to disable that type of play. There is a general consensus that players using a keyboard and mouse have an advantage over standard controller players. This could be a valid point, but Modern Warfare is in the position to possibly debunk that idea when it comes to FPS games. Most people seem to be entirely on board with its cross-play capabilities though, and the hype in various forums is real.

The Future Of Cross-Play

The big question is will Call of Duty continue supporting this feature after Modern Warfare? If cross-play turns out to be successful with this new installment, there is no reason that future games in the series shouldn't follow suit. Call of Duty's developer understands that cross-play is most likely going to be a staple in the future of video games and wants to use Modern Warfare's probable success to their advantage.

This is another step forward for gaming and a massive step for the FPS genre as a whole. While some FPS games focus on story over anything else, the majority tend to focus on the multi-player experience and what they can bring to the table. FPS and multi-player are so closely connected at this point in the industry, the ability to play with friends and strangers across all platforms marks the beginning of a new era and multi-player experience for, not only Call of Duty, but FPS games as a whole.

Call of Duty:Modern Warfare is set to makes waves in the video game industry. The integration of cross-play should impact the FPS genre for years to come and restore faith in a franchise that has been hit or miss for quite some time now. Cross-play will only keep expanding and evolving as more games begin to support the feature, allowing everyone to connect and enjoy games together, regardless of console preference.
