Activision has announced that most post-launch content, like new maps and modes, will release simultaneously across all platforms for the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. More recent games in the franchise have had timed-exclusivity deals with Sony, but it seems this will change.

The announcement is most likely to encourage cross-play support, which is a big selling point for this year's CoD. Players will be able to match with each other regardless of platform, although PC players will only be able to match with console players if they are using a controller. Having timed DLC would obviously split the fanbase, so it's good that "most" content will be released at the same time.

That being said, PS4 users have been promised an "exciting Day 1 advantage," though Activision has yet to announce details on this.

Last week just saw the debut of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta on PS4, where players discovered loot boxes may potentially be part of the game's future. Perhaps Day 1 players on PS4 will get access to free loot boxes early, but we'll have to wait and see.

The Modern Warfare beta will be returning this Thursday and running through the weekend, and PS4 users will once again have an advantage. While PS4 users may play for free on Sept. 19- Sept. 20, Xbox and PC players must pre-order the game for access. Starting at 6 p.m. PT on Sept. 20 however, PC players and Xbox Live Gold members will also be able to play for free until the beta's conclusion. PS4 users will also continue to have access to an exclusive game mode in the beta, called 2v2 Alpha.

Activision also announced Spec Ops mode will return, and will potentially receive more missions through DLC. Spec Ops, which made its debut in Modern Warfare 2, is a cooperative mode where players are ranked in campaign-like missions with a self-contained story.

Activision has already announced that future DLC will be made available for free and that there are no plans for a season pass. For now, we don't know if loot box rumors are true or not (though they seem likely), but we can only hope that if they are added to the game they'll only contain cosmetic improvements.

Full post-launch content plans will be made available on the game's release date, October 25th.
