Call of Duty: Modern Warfare revealed that Special Ops Survival Mode will be coming back to the franchise and fans couldn't be more excited. That's what the headline should have read. Instead, Modern Warfare will feature this mode exclusively on the PlayStation for an entire year before it becomes available for players on the Xbox and PC.
This is an interesting development, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the first game in the franchise (and one of a handful of games overall) to support cross-platform play. That lead people to believe that the console wars could be coming to an end... but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Special Ops Survival Mode has been a fan favorite game type despite being featured (in slightly different ways) in only a handful of games throughout the franchise. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is what truly kicked off the excitement for the game mode. With the Modern Warfare franchise being rebooted, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to really highlight Survival Mode and make it a staple of the Modern Warfare series going forward. While this still could happen, it's off to a rocky start with it being announced as a timed exclusive for the Playstation 4.
One of the biggest complaints brought up by gamers is that they are paying the same amount of money for the title regardless of system, only to have to wait an entire year to play the exclusive portion of the game. Activision and Sony did this as well for Destiny and were met with a ton of backlash. It seems as though money talks, and the deal has been struck up again.
It's hard to tell at the moment how big of an impact a year long exclusive will make on the Call of Duty franchise, but it certainly can't help to raise the excitement of the game for all fans of the franchise (outside of the PlayStation players). With the implementation of cross-platform play, Modern Warfare looked to be trying to bridge the gap between all players. However, it just dropped a massive bomb which seems to further divide its fan-base.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will drop October 25th and will feature Special Ops Survival Mode exclusive for the PlayStation. Xbox and PC gamers will be able to play Survival Mode on October 1, 2020.
