The Mega Man series is now over three decades old. While the series doesn’t put out as many games as it once used to, there are definitely more titles out there then there are years it has been around. That’s certainly an accomplishment worth celebrating. What about the Mega Man games that didn’t come out though?

There are actually more out there then one would think ranging across all consoles and a multitude of genres. Some aren’t that exciting to read about while others have had fans crying over their cancellations for years now. Let’s go through every single known project Capcom sought to scrap. Unless otherwise noted, most of the assets for these games can be found on Unseen64.

10 Maverick Hunter

After wrapping up Metroid Prime 3, a few of the team members at Retro left to create Armature. One of their first big projects was in secret, Maverick Hunter. Similar to what they did with Metroid, Maverick Hunter was going to be a first-person reboot of the Mega Man series. It was canceled in 2010, but not even uncovered until 2013 when Polygon did a deep dive into its history.

9 Mega Man Universe

This was actually announced in 2010 with a claymation trailer that had nothing to do with the game’s premise, or visuals, but still enticed fans nonetheless. It was going to be a Super Mario Maker equivalent but with Mega Man instead. Technically it would have predated that game. Anyway, it was planned as a digital exclusive for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and would even crossover other Capcom legends like Ryu from Street Fighter. Unfortunately it was canceled just a year later in 2011.

8 Mega Man Star Force 4

All that is known about Mega Man Star Force 4 can be seen in the piece of promo art above. Based on that and rumors about the game, it was supposed to be a darker take for the franchise.

The wanted posters and older complexions of the characters makes it appear like at least a game aimed for teens. Presumably it would have also been made for the DS as a tactical/action RPG hybrid like the rest of this series.

7 Mega Man Legends 3

The canceled Mega Man game that may have hurt fans the most was Mega Man Legends 3. The last game left on a cliffhanger in 2000 so a decade later, when this was announced in 2010, it seemed like answers would finally be revealed. Even after a 3DS demo was released, it was canned a year later in 2011, again, probably in part to Keiji Inafune leaving. This prompted fans to make their own fan game based off of this demo. It’s in Japanese though so good luck.

6 Rockman X Interactive

Rockman X Interactive was going to be an adventure game starring Mega Man X if the to title wasn’t a dead giveaway. For whatever reason this was scrapped, but the idea went on to helm another project. Instead of the newer iteration, Capcom went back to the classic version of Mega Man and made Super Adventure Rockman. This adventure game was released exclusively in Japan for the PS1 and Sega Saturn.

5 Wily & Right No Rock Board: That's Paradise GB

This was a recent revelation, as of September, when data miners discovered this canceled game in that Gigaleak from Nintendo months ago. Wily & Right No Rock Board: That's Paradise was originally a NES game in Japan that plays similarly to Mario Party. This game then would have been a port for the Game Boy. All that was discovered so far are two screens proving it at least existed at some point. For those curious, there is a fan translation of the original.

4 Mega Pixar Man

This project has no name or really any relevant data to go on other than this piece of concept art. It was drawn and shown by Gonzalo Ordonez who talked about it belonging to a Pixar like vision of Mega Man. This was unveiled at a developer conference he attended. He had this to say, “Our initial plan was to introduce some kind of project similar to the “Pixar” style, but that opinion was not very well received and then it became more of an “Iron Man” concept.”

3 Mega Man Anniversary Collection (GBA)

Mega Man Anniversary Collection launched in 2004 for the PS2 and GameCube and collected a majority of the original games along with some spinoffs. There was also going to be a Game Boy Advance version which would have collected the five Game Boy games. Those are basically like remixed versions of the NES games. There’s even a trailer for this version of the collection, but it just never came out.

2 Mega Man Maverick Hunter X Sequels

Keiji Inafune wanted to remake the first six Mega Man X games for the PSP. Unfortunately the poor sales of the first Mega Man X remake along with the remake of the first Mega Man had this lofty project canceled. PSP hardware sales outside of Japan were also not great which might have contributed.

This might just be a rumor though because it’s hard to track down Capcom or Inafune concretely saying this was the case and there is no visuals or concept art available.

1 Rockman Online

As the name might suggest, this was going to be a PC MMO. It was only planned in Korea though as a collaboration between Capcom and NeoWiz Games. Unfortunately NeoWiz went through a change in 2012 and once reforged this game was canceled in 2013. It was going to mainly take place in the X universe although the original series would have also appeared. There is plenty of artwork, screenshots, and videos still out there for Rockman Online for those curious.
