When cartoons first got their start, they seemed to be mostly aimed toward children with the sole purpose of making people laugh, yet over the years, cartoons have evolved and allowed us to experience stories from all sorts of different genres. Cartoons no longer are only there to make us laugh but now have the ability to make us feel happy, scared, cry, and a whole variety of emotions. Strangely enough, cartoons have also become no stranger to those more tender and sweet moments that make us able to turn red.

We’ve seen plenty of cartoon couples throughout the years and while sometimes they are blatantly obvious (such as Homer and Marge Simpson), internet fandom has often times delved even deeper into potential romances that could be. Whether a cartoon relationship is obvious or not, there is no limit to the amount of comics that have surfaced on the web depicting cartoon lovers in romantic situations.

Of course, not all these cartoon character comics are sweet and adorable. Sure. Plenty of fan art online goes the “cute” route, though others like to take a more scandalous route. Some of them are just so out there while other just seem entirely strange for their subject material that they will have you laughing out loud. Even though some of these comics will have you saying “Aw, how sweet!” others will certainly have us blushing. With that said, here are 24 hilarious comics that will definitely make us turn red.

22 House Rules... Door Stays Open

limey404.deviantart.com

We never really got to see if Helga’s dream of her and Arnold becoming an item ever really played out by the end of the popular Nicktoon series Hey Arnold!… I mean, they were only in elementary school after all. Though this comic seems to to depict Arnold entering his teenage years… and it seems like hormones finally caught up to the football head!

While Arnold and Helga might not have seemed like a plausible couple during the show’s run, there’s really no telling how much the two would have evolved as characters over a few years. Though seemingly, Arnold eventually grew an interest in Helga and it seems like Helga finally came around to confessing her true feelings.

Though I’m a little surprised she’s still walking around with a unibrow.

Arnold’s grandparents might need to start enforcing an open door policy when he has his “study partner” over from now on, however. Grandma Gertie is a little slow on what goes on behind closed doors, it seems, as she thinks that those marks on Arnold’s neck are simply mosquito bites. Get a clue, grandma. Our little football head is finally at the age where this kind of thing is common!

21 A Powerful Match

PrincessCallyie.deviantart.com

The Powerpuff Girls are another unlikely group of cartoon characters that might be difficult to imagine getting their feet wet in the dating scene… especially when you think that they might be dating their original rivals, the Rowdyruff Boys! Considering the Rowdyruff Boys were once pretty much defeated by the idea of cooties, seeing these two young trios getting close with one another down the road seems kind of unimaginable.

But hey, we all believed in cooties at one point or another.

It only seems to make sense that each Powerpuff Girl would date their male counterpart, so here we see Blossom actually dating her once upon a time enemy, Brick. It seems like the two still have a little tension between them and Brick still seems to be his typical obnoxious self. While I don’t necessarily see the headstrong Blossom putting up with that kind of nonsense, she still seems to be attracted to Brick, even if he is a little too egotistical for his own good. Could Blossom do better? Oh, I certainly hope so and if I were the Professor, this is one relationship that I would be watching over carefully. Hopefully Brick turned away from his life of wrong doings!

20 He Really Does Deserve The Best

The 2017 live action remake of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast stirred up a little bit of controversy when they announced that they were making the character Lefou gay. While the LGBT community has been more included in various forms of media throughout the years, it is still kind of a touchy subject when it comes to movies and shows targeted toward children. But hey, children are going to learn about gay relationships at one point or another.

The controversy was pretty ridiculous as well considering it wasn’t blatantly obvious in the film and it was something you’d barely even notice or think twice about, especially if you were a kid. Even as a child and not totally understanding that gay relationships were a thing, I always knew that Lefou was totally crushing hard on Gaston, and quite frankly, the gay subplot with Lefou really made a lot of sense.

This comic of course illustrates the changes that Disney made to Lefou’s character and it seems like Lefou is letting Gaston know for the first time that he very much enjoys his company. The twinkle in Gaston’s eyes is a little shocking, however, as he might actually have feelings for Lefou himself!

19 Maybe He Should Have Saved Her First

Mario might not traditionally be a cartoon character as he obviously originates from Nintendo’s flagship video game series, though the iconic plumber has dabbled in the world of animation multiple times and has an upcoming movie (hopefully better than that live action one!) in the works. Anyone who has played New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the Nintendo 3DS will likely remember that one of the game’s biggest gimmicks was trying to collect a million coins.

While coin collecting has always been a staple of the series, it wasn’t necessarily an innovative gimmick that made the game any better.

In fact, it was kind of tedious. Regardless, this comic shows that Mario actually had a good reason for trying to collect all those coins, even if it meant holding out on saving the princess a little while longer. Royalty likely has expensive tastes and Mario wished to spare no expense when it came to finding the perfect engagement ring when he proposed to Princess Peach. It is about time too! They’ve been going strong for three decades and he still hasn’t put a ring on it yet.

Then again, I guess Mario’s most recent adventure proved that Peach was a strong independent woman who didn’t need a man tying her down!

18 Who Knew He Was So Unstoppable?

I always thought that Ron Stoppable and Kim Possible were kind of a weird match for each other as Ron always just felt a little too goofy compared to his much more mature comrade, yet regardless, fans of the series really seem to want these two to be an item.

Maybe we’ll get the chance to see their relationship blossom in the upcoming live-action film.

Until then, we can at least imagine how their relationship originally started. This comic shows Kim stumbling upon Ron’s body… and apparently for the first time. In Ron’s traditional clumsiness, and for whatever reason him snacking right before grabbing a bite with Kim, Mr. Stoppable spilled salsa all over his shirt and had to change. And boy, what a treat that turned out to be for Kim! Who knew that Ron was so buff and in secret this whole time? While he certainly doesn’t come off as a gym bunny, he’s definitely been hitting the weights and packing on a few pounds of muscle. It looks like this finally piqued Kim’s interest and now she will do almost anything to get him out of his clothes. I hope that Ron brought a spare shirt along with him!

17 Their Wardrobe Was Always Weird

GrouchoM.deviantart.com

Jessie and James of Team Rocket from the Pokémon anime have always kind of been a weird duo. They are definitely one of the most incompetent pairings I’ve ever seen in a cartoon and the two of them have been pursuing a single Pikachu for years to absolutely to avail. And of course, there is that one weird thing about James.

Over the course of the series, Team Rocket as used plenty of disguises to try to trick Ash and his friends (and somehow it keeps working). Yet almost every time Jessie and James have a costume change, their disguises are usually swapped from what they should be, usually having James dressed in the girl’s costume and Jessie in the boy’s costume.

You would almost think that James actually likes to dress up as a girl.

Jessie finally found a costume that displays some of her better assets and even though she looks great in the bunny style costume, James can’t help but think that the costume would actually be better suited for him. I do not think anyone really knows what James’s deal is, but we do know that he definitely has some unique tastes when it comes to fashion.

16 She Likes A Hairy Guy

webcomicname.com

Most people would think that Belle kind of hit the jackpot in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast as she was originally taken prisoner, but pretty much ended up getting married to the most eligible bachelor in all of France. Who would have ever guessed that the Beast was actually a fairy tale prince and ruler of his own land?

While the movie definitely tried to make the Beast look like he was grotesque and a more ferocious animal, it is fun to imagine that Belle might have had no interest in him turning human again.

Some girls just dig a hairier guy.

We strangely never even get to hear the Beast’s name in the original animated film and we are stuck on just calling him Beast rather than his actual name Prince Adam. It seems like Belle actually prefers it that way, however, as in the comic, she seems somewhat disappointed when the Beast turns back into his normal human self. Will Belle still stick around to see if this relationship can still work? It is hard to tell, but I’d imagine having the Beast back in human form would help raise a lot fewer questions at the reception than if he had fangs.

15 Friends Until The End

goneintorapture.com

I can’t really explain why, but I kind of got the heebie-jeebies when I saw the new trailer for the upcoming live-action film for Christopher Robin. While I believe that Disney will have no problem reinventing the magic of Winnie the Pooh to the big screen and in live action, seeing the little yellow teddy bear walking around in a realistic environment was strangely unsettling.

And here I was thinking that it would be impossible to make Pooh Bear unsettling.

The Christopher Robin trailer wasn’t the only thing that has ever attempted to make Winnie the Pooh a little less light-hearted, however as this comic does just a fine job showing the darker side of the adorable teddy bear. This is a fairly iconic line shared between Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin as Winnie the Pooh explains that he wants Christopher Robin in his life for the entirety of it. Still, the idea of passing is a little grim for a children’s book and cartoon and Pooh stating that “The pact is sealed” makes us think that Pooh might not be quite as innocent as he tries to make himself out to be. Um, what pact? This is definitely something I doubt Christopher Robin signed up for!

14 A More Practical Gift

bluetoadcomics.com

Princess Aurora sort of got the bad end of the deal when she was given her birthday gifts from fairies Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather at the beginning of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. While many would be happy to have such gifts such as the gift of beauty or the gift of song, maybe they should have first bestowed upon her the gift to be able to defend herself.

Before being given her final gift from the fairy Merryweather, Maleficent comes and breaks up the party by putting a curse on the child princess.

Maybe they should have just invited Maleficent to the party to begin with.

Merryweather then decided to give her the gift to weaken the evil witch’s curse so that instead of being knocked off by the curse, she would simply fall into a long slumber as well. That’s good and everything, but maybe they should have given Princess Aurora the gift to be able to take Maleficent down in a fight instead. Sure, it would be a very different take on the movie, but I’d pay to see a remake where Maleficent gets punched by a baby Princess Aurora. It definitely would be an interesting take for a remake!

13 Wait, What?

MayeIV.deviantart.com

Marceline from Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time is by no means an ordinary vampire and the lore of the mythical creature is quite different in the children’s show than in other forms of media. Then again, Adventure Time vampire lore is still better than Twilight’s lore. Rather than actually drinking blood, the show’s vampires can actually just drink the color red out of items, probably as a means to make the show more appropriate to children. Though I doubt Adventure Time would show Marceline drinking the red out of Princess Bubblegum’s underpants as that might be just a little too risqué for children.

This comic shows Marceline having just finished indulging in a late night snack, but much to Princess Bubblegum’s dismay, she can no longer find her once red undergarments. Interesting choice of clothing for a princess who used to wear all pink regardless, but those grey garbs certainly would clash with her skin tone! Of course, this is just a piece of fan art representing a joke, but it also further implies and goes along with the theory that Marceline and Princess Bubblegum once had a lesbian romance. Even if they are quite different, you can’t deny that there is chemistry there!

12 An Unlikely Playdate

Gulliver63.deviantart.com

It is kind of hard to believe that the Family Guy and The Simpsons crossover happened already quite a few years ago as when the two shows were once going up against one another for ratings, we probably never imagined that the two shows would actually get its crossover. Seeing the two show’s characters collide certainly was an interesting experience, but it seems unlikely that it will ever happen again.

In the crossover, we got to see their respective counterparts hang out with one another. Peter with Homer, Marge with Lois, and Lisa with Meg and so on, but one lost opportunity seems to be showing Stewie and Maggie in many scenes together. Of course, this is likely because Maggie is a mute character, but it is still always fun seeing Stewie interact with other babies that don’t hold the same qualities as he has.

Still, I doubt this piece of fan art would have been representative of what the crossover would have depicted if they did have any scenes together. The idea of Maggie being an evil mastermind like Stewie trying to enslave humans just seems too farfetched after seeing her character on the air for three decades. We prefer the cute and innocent Maggie any day.

11 Worst. Prank. Ever.

insectikette.deviantart.com

Growing up with Batman: The Animated Series, I always thought the subplot between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy was so far ahead of its time. The idea of these two female supervillains teaming up because “girl power!” and doing their own thing, especially with Harley Quinn ditching the maniacal Joker to go along with Ivy just seemed too cool. Of course, this down the road, this led a lot of people to assume that something more was going on with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, and admittedly, even as a kid I kind of had the same feeling.

This comic definitely portrays the two in a less romantic setting and more so as just friends, but it still goes to show how much of a prankster Harley Quinn is and how protective Poison Ivy has always been of her partner.

Harley tells Ivy some devastating news over the phone, only to take it back and admit it was all an April Fool’s joke. When asking who the guy was, Poison Ivy would probably instantly assume it was The Joker, but Harley Quinn jokes about there being just “too many of them.” What a player! Thankfully, it was all in good fun… even if it did make Poison Ivy a little frustrated!

10 Get Ready Player Two

14-bid.deviantart.com

I would like to believe that Doug Funnie ultimately did end up with Patti Mayonnaise and even though the show’s conclusion never officially showed them getting together (yes, even including when the Disney Corporation took over the series), there have still been many instances when Patti’s mutual interest in Doug has been implied.

Unfortunately, Doug is just all too timid to really make much of a move on Patti Mayonnaise. While his interest for her is beyond obvious to the viewers, Doug has always sort of lacked the confidence to take the appropriate steps. Sure, he dreams big, but nothing will ever move forward between these two until Doug mans up.

In this comic, however, it looks like Patti Mayonnaise finally got sick of waiting around for Doug to make a move and she is finally going to make the move herself! Enjoying a nice quiet night in playing video games, Doug was probably just happy being with Patti… though he probably didn’t expect it to turn out like this! It looks like Patti is sick of playing the games the two have been doing for so many years and is ready to jump right into the bonus round… even if Doug isn’t entirely ready to do so himself!

9 Gaming Couples For The Win

pinterest.com/MoonsKitten

So we might as well move on to another webcomic of another cartoon couple playing video games. Of course, these past two comics only reminded me how awesome it is to be in a gaming relationship. The rivalry, the cuddling… why is it so hard to meet someone with similar interests? Video game couples for the win.

We’ve already talked a bit about Princess Bubblegum and Marceline potentially having had a relationship in the past as it is somewhat alluded to in the show, but due to it being a kid’s show, we’ll probably never know for sure. Still, fans of the show are more than happy to indulge in the possibility of this pairing and despite their differences, it does not seem too farfetched.

It looks like game night might be getting a little spicier than either of them have anticipated as well as Marceline makes the dare that the loser has to do whatever the winner says. Princess Bubblegum seems pretty confident in her skills, however, but one can only imagine what these girls have planned for one another. They might need to put B-MO in sleep mode when they are done gaming, however. It will probably be no time for his wandering eyes!

8 They Grow Up So Fast

calibappo.deviantart.com

Phineas and Ferb was probably one of my favorite cartoon series I watched as an adult that was obviously targeted toward kids, but I could not help but love all of the quirkiness and extreme situations that the show threw the audience's way. It was easily just as entertaining for adults as it was for children and I wish it were still on the air today.

We never really got to see the subtle romance of Phineas and Isabella blossom into something more as throughout the show’s run, Phineas was always just a little to slow to catch on to the fact that Isabella was attracted to him. Though Phineas was always more interested in his wacky summer adventures with his brother than he was girls. It just comes with the age!

This comic shows Phineas and Isabella showing up to wish their friend Haley a happy birthday, but it looks like they got a little bit more than they bargained for when they arrived. Well, Phineas did, anyway. It looks like they are being asked to follow a script, but it seems like Phineas might be a little bit uncomfortable with it. Not the precocious Isabella, however! She is down for whatever is written in ink!

7 She's Not To Be Reckoned With

superyo.nuxit.net

Chuckie Finster always seemed to get the worst of Angelica’s taunting when it came to the Nickelodeon series Rugrats. Even though Angelica later became a somewhat less evil child, Chuckie’s lack of self-esteem, his gullibility, and his fear of everything made him an easy target when it came to finding someone to pick on.

Chuckie and Angelica are another unique pairing in the fan art community as many people have imagined these two becoming an item down the road. While it is totally possible, it is still somewhat hard to imagine when looking back at the original cartoon series as Angelica has just always seemed so mean to Chuckie. Still, people grow, and at some point, feelings may have developed.

This piece of fan art paints the two slightly older than before and while it definitely doesn’t look like the two have an interest in each other yet, at least Chuckie is somewhat standing up for himself. Well, as much as calling Angelica a cootie breath to others can be considered sticking up for yourself I guess. Angelica still seems to be in charge of the situation, however, and has no problem getting physical with anyone that throws any shade her way.

6 An Unlikely Union

Garabato2.deviantart.com

Another crowd favorite when it comes to unlikely fan art pairings is Timmy Turner and his evil babysitter Vicky from The Fairly OddParents. Vicky may have been relentlessly cruel to Timmy Turner (despite Timmy having pretty much ultimate wishes at his disposal) and it doesn’t seem totally likely that these two would ever become an item. For one, the age difference meaning they probably would not start dating until the two of them were much older and secondly, Timmy’s personality really would not match Vicky’s in a relationship.

But hey, sometimes opposites attract.

Here, we get a look into Timmy Turner’s future and discover that his life might have had a few crazy twists over the years, landing him into marriage with his once cruel babysitter. Not only are the two wed as husband and wife as adults, they’ve even had several children over the years. It seems like their oldest child has got quite the attitude on her as well which seems all to appropriate as she has taken up both the look and the personality of her mother Vicky. At least the two youngest of the new Turner clan look like sweethearts and far less bratty!

5 A Not So Romantic Valentine

mightyfilm.deviantart.com

Tina Belcher just might be one of the most awkward characters ever created for a cartoon series. Her strangely big mojo is kind of part of her charm, however, as she seems overwhelmingly attracted to the opposite gender, much to her father’s discomfort.

But I guess Tina has reached that age where she is boy crazy.

Even though Tina has pursued many boys over the course of Bob’s Burgers' run, we always see her going back to Jimmy Jr, the dance-crazed son of Jimmy Pesto. Even though Jimmy Jr. sometimes seems oblivious to Tina’s advances (or maybe he’s just not that interested?), Tina is still relentless.

Of course, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to display one’s affection and Tina, of course, was not going to pass up an opportunity to give Jimmy Jr. a Valentine. Of course, Jimmy thinks that the Valentine was supposed to be representative of a heart (because duh), but it seems like Tina meant to make her Valentine look like her favorite quality in Jimmy Jr. While most of these comics seem a little bit farfetched, this actually seems like something that Tina would actually do in the show. It’s definitely one of the more awkward Valentines I’ve ever seen!

4 He Never Was Too Suave

pakwan008.deviantart.com

There is a good chance that Hamtaro may have just been the cutest show to ever exist on television. While it might not be the most popular anime ever, it was definitely a favorite of mine growing up as all the Ham-Hams were just so gosh darn adorable. If you remember the show, you might be quite familiar with the retelling of this scene where Hamtaro tries to get Boss to woo his love interest Bijou.

Of course, this love triangle was always a little bit more complicated.

Even though Hamtaro might be a little too daft for his own good, we all know that Bijou was actually way more interested in Hamtaro, despite Boss trying to win her heart. In the original episode, Hamtaro tries to get Boss to do a song and dance for Bijou, but he freezes up right when it is time to give it his all. Even though Hamtaro tries to help him out, Bijou ultimately falls for Hamtaro.

While this artist decided to change up the art style a bit and make the Ham-Hams more anthropomorphic, this still captures the silliness of the cartoon series. I just wish they would go ahead and revive this series!

3 They Melt Each Other's Hearts

RobertNat.deviantart.com

Disney’s Frozen sort of featured a slightly different princess than traditional Disney films. While Anna might have been the more stereotypical princess who falls in love upon just talking to a guy, Elsa was very much the loner between the two of them and a love story was never really fleshed out for her which was a nice change of pace. That doesn’t mean that we still can’t have some fun and imagine who might be a suitable date for the princess with the cold heart.

Plenty of fan art on the web have dabbled with Elsa’s potential love life, but none of them make me giggle as much as the idea of her dating Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero. There’s just something ironic about a Disney princess dating someone from one of the most rough games in history. Yet with both of them being masters of ice, these two definitely seem like a match.

Sub-Zero might be a little bit too cocky for my tastes, though as he seems to think that he can control his icy powers better than Elsa. Sorry, Sub-Zero. You may be a skilled fighter, but we’re pretty sure Elsa’s powers far surpass yours any day of the week!
