Over the years, animated movies from the likes of Disney and DreamWorks have given us plenty of interesting, much-loved characters to become huge fans of. Whether you've got a soft spot for Disney Princess films, prefer the more fantasy-esque world of How To Train Your Dragon, or like the slightly darker tone of Coraline, there's a cartoon movie out there for you. These films arguably defined our childhoods as much as our favorite books and video games did—we related to them because a lot of the characters were barely more than children themselves.

As many of us 90s kids have grown up, our love for our favorite classic cartoon movies hasn't diminished—even though their lead characters can't age up with us. But what if they did? What if characters from the Disney, DreamWorks, and other animated universes got to pass all of the same milestones that we do—like graduating high school and heading off to college? To be honest, that would make for some amazing animated movie series. Who wouldn't want to see what a bunch of cartoon heroes, heroines, and even villains would get up to in university? Sadly, it's doubtful that such an idea will ever make it to the big screen—but that's where the fans come in.

Across the Internet, there's a wealth of fan art that depicts everyone's favorite animated movie characters as college kids. There are crossovers, modernizations, and non-human characters being turned into people. Some of these characters look to be studying hard, while others... Well, they've come to college for the social life. Here are just a few examples of amazing art showing cartoon film characters reimagined as students.

25 Hiccup And Toothless, How To Train Your Dragon

via: pinterest.com

This interpretation of How To Train Your Dragon's Hiccup as a college student is frankly nothing short of adorable. Like, Tumblr user Kadeart has totally nailed it. For one, this college-age, modern-day Hiccup totally fits the personality and appearance of the original character. The messy hair! The sweater vest that's the same shade as his medieval-era counterpart! That smile! Accurate doesn't even cut it. We'd totally hang out with this Hiccup—he looks friendly, adorably goofy, and like a pretty good study partner to boot.

Then you have this version of Toothless, who's no longer a dragon—instead, he's Hiccup's sassy yet super-cute cat! To be fair, this transformation does make some sense. Taking a dragon to college might not be the most practical thing in the world. Where would it even live? It's not like you could hide one in your dorm room!  Even though this Toothless is a totally different species to his movie counterpart, he's still recognizable. He's got the trademark yellow-and-black, slightly crossed eyes. His tail is also slightly forked—a bit like a dragon's, am I right?!

It looks like Hiccup is so devoted to his feline friend that he's actually studying the species as a part of his course—look at the book he's clutching! Is he studying veterinary science, perhaps? Or is this just a bit of "light" personal reading? Either seems feasible!

24 Belle, Beauty And The Beast

via: anooshasyed.com

Now, we all know that if she'd been born a couple of centuries later, Beauty and the Beast's Belle would have been off to college like a shot as soon as she turned 18. She's got a deep thirst for knowledge, wants to have new experiences, and wants to be totally surrounded by books. University is basically the best place for her! But if Belle did somehow make her way into the modern world, what kind of woman would she be? Where would her interests lie outside of her studies? The incredibly talented Anoosha Syed has answered these questions in this adorable piece of fan art.

This version of Belle is a fangirl!

Check out her TARDIS-print skirt, and her Sailor Moon lunchbox! Belle has good taste in TV shows, clearly. We love her slightly preppy, librarian-chic outfit as a whole: it suits her character perfectly and even matches her trademark colors. The TARDIS skirt is a pretty similar shade to Belle's initial blue dress in the movie, while the yellow sweater fills in for her golden gown! The attention to detail here is insane. We even get a slight clue as to what Belle's studying. She's clutching a copy of The Phantom of the Opera, an incredibly famous French novel (and, of course, a smash hit musical). Has Belle taken her love of books and put it to good use in a Literature degree? Seems legit...

23 Snow, Snow White And The Seven Dwarves

via: pinterest.com

In the 21st Century, Snow White wouldn't be content to just lie around and wait for a prince to come and save her. Hopefully, her stepmother wouldn't try to poison her, either—that's an episode of Law and Order right there... Anyway, this version of Snow—as drawn by Owleo on DeviantArt—is too busy focusing on her education to enchant the Prince. There are still some aspects of this image that hark back to the original Disney animated character: Snow's outfit is a clear example. Although her sweater-and-skirt combo is thoroughly modern, it uses the color palette of the original Snow White dress. The character is also still sporting a classic jet-black bob—we can't imagine her any other way!

However, this is where the similarities end. This Snow isn't holed up in a cottage in the woods looking after seven dudes she just met. She's on her way to class, textbooks in hand, and ready to take control of her own destiny. What would she study? Politics, perhaps, so that she could challenge the tyrannical regime of her evil stepmother, the Queen? Or maybe music—Snow always did have a beautiful singing voice, after all! Whatever the case, she's not dreaming of the day her prince will come. Instead, she's looking forward to the day she can do herself proud and graduate with honors. You go, Snow!

22 Cinderella, Cinderella

via: collegehumor.com

Here's another Disney Princess who's swapped a "fairytale ending" for a slightly more independent life. Instead of escaping her stepmother's clutches by bumping into a prince, forgetting her shoe, then eventually reuniting with the guy and marrying him, this CollegeHumor version of Cinderella took herself off to college to gain her freedom. We're not really sure what exactly this princess would study—if you think about it, her personality isn't really fleshed out in the original animated movie. Her defining characteristic is "physically attractive," which isn't great. There's more to people than their looks, Disney! At least the newer Disney animated films seem to recognize this...

Still, some things never change.

For Cinderella, this is the fact that she finds herself constantly cleaning up after people. First, it was her stepmother and stepsisters; now, it's her slobbish and messy housemates. Cinderella certainly doesn't look very pleased to have been left to do all of the post-party cleaning, again! Anyone who's ever lived in a flat-share can probably relate to this, to be honest. There's always that one person you live with who leaves their mess EVERYWHERE. If you didn't have a housemate like that, then it was probably you. Oops! Anyway, why is Cinderella even doing this cleaning? She should passive-aggressively leave the mess outside of the offending person's door, like any self-respecting college student!

21 Coraline And Norman, Coraline/Paranorman

via: dracophile.deviantart.com

Who doesn't love a good crossover? This artwork by Dracophile on DeviantArt brings together the lead characters of two much-loved Laika animated movies: Coraline from the film of the same name, and Norman from Paranorman! These two seem to have grown up, gone to college and found each other. How cute! Are they attending a special university for those people connected to the paranormal, perhaps? There seems to be a ghost hanging out behind these two, and an ominous shadow lurking behind a tree at the back... Hopefully, this campus has tight security!

To be honest, it makes perfect sense for Coraline and Norman to become college besties—or even a couple! They've both communicated with the paranormal—Coraline by visiting the "Other World," and Norman thanks to his ability to see ghosts—and have ended up feeling pretty isolated because of it. Nobody really believes or accepts that they've had these extraordinary experiences—at first, at least. However, the two characters would definitely be able to understand and sympathize with what the other has gone through. They can chat about ghosts, spirits, zombies, and other paranormal entities without fear of judgment! Maybe they've both gone to college to study these phenomena further... Or maybe they'd decided to seek out a "normal" life and study Math or something instead.

20 Rapunzel And Merida, Tangled/Brave

via: pinterest.com

Kadeart is at it again with these incredible interpretations of Disney Princesses Rapunzel and Merida as college students. The characters almost look anime-inspired, and we're totally down for it! Let's start with Merida. It looks like she's kept up her main hobby of archery—maybe it's her main extra-curricular activity! Either way, it wouldn't surprise us if this fiery Scottish princess took her bow and arrow everywhere—it's basically her main passion. Merida's outfit is also subtly medieval-inspired, which we love. Okay, the denim shorts are totally modern, but have you noticed the string detailing on her top's neckline? That's a medieval touch right there!

As for Rapunzel, we're totally unsurprised that her college-age version has chosen to study art. In Tangled, this poor young princess had to spend her increasingly monotonous days in the tower desperately looking for a free spot on the wall to paint over. In this artwork, though, she's free to produce as much art as she wants—on actual canvases, no less! The character does have a couple of modern twists—check out her little white cardigan, and her adorable half-moon glasses! However, she's still totally recognizable thanks to her trademark pink gown and her flowing golden locks. On a practical note, I wouldn't want to have to use the dorm showers after Rapunzel's been washing her hair. Can you imagine the amount of shedding you'd get with that much hair? The shower block would be coated in stray golden strands!

19 Aladdin, Aladdin

via: hyung86.deviantart.com

Here's a thought. What if, instead of having to make ends meet by stealing on the streets, Aladdin had received a fully-funded college scholarship instead? Would he have still encountered Princess Jasmine—perhaps on campus somewhere? Most importantly, would his university allow his best friend—Abu the Monkey—to come and live on campus too? Well, DeviantArt user Hyung86 has thought about all of this, and come up with this amazing illustration of Aladdin as a student. It's just one example of a whole series of pieces this artist has created—make sure to check out their entire Disney University collection!

As well as drawing Aladdin as a thoroughly modern college student, Hyung86 has come up with a bit of a backstory for this interpretation of the character too. Apparently, this Aladdin is a dancer—he "practiced dance with Esmerelda (from The Hunchback of Notre Dame) in the college gym!" He's also apparently a huge fan of the video game The Prince of Persia. Makes sense! No word on whether he's run into Jasmine outside of classes yet, but hey—the world is Aladdin's oyster! He's got plenty of time to woo the Princess. Plus, with the Genie by his side, he can probably wish to have any college fees he's accrued paid off. Lucky thing.

18 Meg And Jasmine, Hercules/Aladdin

via: sophiesmile.deviantart.com

Have you ever wondered which Disney characters would be friends if they all somehow found themselves living in the same time period and place? Well, DeviantArt's SophieSmile certainly has—and she's decided that Meg and Jasmine, the heroines of Hercules and Aladdin respectively, would definitely be best buds at college. To be fair, their friendship makes a lot of sense! They're both strong, independent woman who feel trapped by their circumstances—Jasmine because she's being forced to marry, and Meg because she's technically Hades' slave. They both very much believe that they don't need men to solve their problems for them and don't take nonsense from anyone.

It's a friendship match made in heaven!

All in all, these college versions of Meg and Jasmine are pretty incredible. Although Meg's abandoned her Ancient Greek garb for a more modern T-shirt-and-shorts combo, her iconic ponytail still makes her recognizable. We also love Jasmine's star-embellished hotpants. Is this a subtle reference to her nighttime carpet ride with Aladdin, perhaps? Not that these two need men in their life to make them happy, of course. We don't know what or who they're looking at in this image, but hey—maybe they're pulling those unimpressed expressions because Hercules and Aladdin are making fools of themselves. It wouldn't be the first time.

17 Jack Frost And Hiccup, Rise Of The Guardians/How To Train Your Dragon

via: pinterest.com

Fans of DreamWorks' animated movies love creating pieces of crossover art between How To Train Your Dragon and Rise of the Guardians. Everyone seems to think that Jack Frost and Hiccup would be best friends—and Kadeart is no exception. In this follow-up piece to the Hiccup and Toothless artwork we saw earlier, Jack Frost joins his pal for a study session—although his heart doesn't seem to quite be in it! While Hiccup is totally dedicated to his studies, Jack is apparently easily distracted. This does make sense in the context of his movie character—in Rise of the Guardians, Jack is pretty mischevious and cares more about fun than fulfilling his responsibilities. Still, he committed to becoming a Guardian in the end—just as he'll hopefully commit to his college course!

This anime-inspired version of Jack is pretty true to the original character, all things considered. He's still got his white hair and his very pale skin, and his outfit is pretty much identical to the one he wears in much of Rise of the Guardians! We also love the fact that Jack has been joined at college by Bunnymund—or at least, a normal rabbit-version of Bunnymund. Question is, would this calm, Australian bunny get on with the cat version of Toothless? We'd like to think so!

16 Anna And Elsa, Frozen

via: muttonfudge.deviantart.com

Well, isn't this fan edit of Frozen's Anna and Elsa just one of the most beautiful things you've ever seen! Seriously, the skill that's gone into this is immense. Like, you can barely tell that this wasn't made by actual Disney. Kudos to MuttonFudge on DeviantArt for creating such believable fan art. Let's start with Anna, whose brightly colored outfit perfectly matches her bubbly personality! Considering leaving her castle once led to this princess getting completely overexcited, we imagine she'd be thrilled with the freedom of going away to college. She'll do fine, we're sure—just as long as she doesn't fall for any more Prince Hans-type characters...

Then we have Elsa, who's keeping to her usual Snow queen aesthetic with a white-and-pale-pink ensemble. Now that Elsa isn't afraid of her ice powers, you have to wonder if she'd be willing to use them to her advantage in college. For example, if she really, really didn't want to go to class one day, she could whip up a quick severe snowstorm that would make it impossible to venture out of her dorm room. Just a thought! Mostly, though, we think that Elsa would spend her time looking out for her little sister—and reading up on Political Science! She's going to be the best Queen Arendelle has ever seen.

15 Tiana, The Princess And The Frog

via: vanessaswann13.deviantart.com

If you went through your college years kissing lots of metaphorical frogs and hoping they were your prince or princess, don't worry—you're not alone. Tiana over here is perhaps the most famous frog-kisser of all time, and she's now been reinterpreted as a college student herself! In this piece of artwork by VanessaSwann13 on DeviantArt, one particular color comes through very strongly: green! Just like in The Princess and the Frog, Tiana freaking loves this color, and it shows. However, we're not quite sure how practical it would be to wear her green tiara to classes! Surely it would just a lot of attention that a busy student could do without?

Of course, there's also the question of what Tiana would go to college to study. Since running her own restaurant is her dream, maybe she would go to university to learn the culinary arts? Either that or Business and Management, just to give her the best shot possible at becoming the boss woman of her dreams. Tiana has always been one of the most determined and hard-working Disney Princesses, and that'd probably be true of her college-age self too. Also, how cute would it be if Charlotte was her college roommate? BFF goals!

14 Rapunzel And Eugene, Tangled

via: seniorgoldenspork.deviantart.com

The Disney fan artists of the world seem to be in total agreement as to what Tangled's Rapunzel would study at college: it's Art or nothing! In this piece by DeviantArt's SeniorGoldenSpork, it's Eugene who appears with Rapunzel rather than Merida—and he doesn't seem to be having a good time! Rapunzel's clearly either totally unaware that her impossibly long hair is being a bit of a nuisance, or is totally fine with her poor boyfriend being given the task of carrying it around.

Whatever the case, Eugene does not look pleased!

The devil is in the detail in this particular piece of artwork. For example, you've probably seen the splotches of paint on Rapunzel's jeans and seen them as a cute way to emphasize her artistic talents. However, did you spot the small painting of the sun symbol from Tangled hidden among the general messy paint splats? The fact that Rapunzel's shirt reads "Team Eugene" is pretty adorable too. You've got to wonder how and why she acquired that top, though. Is Eugene a prominent sports player for these two's college? Is he running for a student body position? Or does she just love him THAT much? Who knows! Whatever the case, Eugene's college work is probably suffering due to the fact he's been given the job of Royal Hair Carrier...

13 Miguel And Tulio, The Road To El Dorado

via: lorazoronicktrance.deviantart.com

If there are any animated movie characters out there that would be the slightly nerdy, slightly rebellious kids of their college, it's Miguel and Tulio from The Road To El Dorado. These two adventurers have clearly stopped looking for the fabled City of Gold and have settled down to do some studying instead. Either that or they used the gold from the city to pay for their college degrees. Heaven knows you'd need a fair bit of the stuff to clear a university loan...

Anyway, to say that these two have come to college to study is probably incorrect. Judging by this fan art from LoraZoroNickTrance on DeviantArt, they're too focused on chilling out and having fun to care about learning anything! Tulio looks to be the edgier of these two guys: he's casually stood there smoking, and seems to have his ear pierced too! He's also wearing an incredibly clever T-shirt: 'Au', of course, is the chemical symbol for gold. We see what you did there, LoraZoroNickTrance! As for Miguel, he's totally engrossed in whatever game he's playing on his Nintendo DS. Honestly, I'm sure most of us can relate to that on some level. Who needs to get a college degree when there are video games out there to be completed... Right?

12 Anna And Hans, Frozen

via: tetra-zelda.deviantart.com

When looking at this piece of artwork by DeviantArt's Tetra-Zelda, we like to think it takes place in an alternate universe where Prince Hans of the Southern Isles isn't actually a terrible person. It's the only way we can bear the sight of him anywhere near Anna, the girl whose heart he broke before he left her to succumb to the ice curse. Hans will never, ever be forgiven. Forget "Love Is An Open Door"—here's hoping he gets plenty of doors slammed in his face for the rest of his life!

On the bright side, this interpretation of him and Anna during their college years is super cute! It looks like they're going out on some kind of date night, or to a fancy college event. Whatever the case, modern-day Hans is looking pretty sharp—and he's even bought Anna flowers! Again, here's hoping he's actually being genuinely adorable in this universe! As for Anna, the modern reworking of her iconic Frozen dress is super-cute. Plus, chokers are really in right now! It's good to see this relaxing, slightly more fun side of college life for our favorite Disney characters. It's not all studying, you know! Although it mostly is. That's kinda the point.

11 Ariel, The Little Mermaid

via: collegehumor.com

This CollegeHumor twist on Disney's The Little Mermaid is great on so many levels. In this cartoon, Ariel isn't actually a mermaid at all—she's just a Marine Biology college student! Question is, was she a mermaid at any point in this alternate universe? Did her father Triton maybe agree to grant Ariel legs provided she used them to get herself to the nearest educational institution? Whatever the case, we can't imagine anyone more suited to this particular degree than Ariel. In fact, if she did live under the sea before her college days began, she's got a bit of an unfair advantage!

Not that Ariel is thinking about any of this, of course.

In fact, she doesn't seem to be focused on her studies at all! Instead, she's totally enchanted by Prince Eric, who's across the hall in his European History class. That's definitely a worthwhile subject for a future king to be studying! Political Science next, perhaps? Eric looks to be totally engrossed in his class and blissfully unaware that there's a girl staring at him in a loving way from the next classroom along. Hopefully, Ariel doesn't resort to exchanging her voice for the opportunity to woo Eric in this version of her tale. It's not like she needs to, really—she just needs to "accidentally" bump into him after class! We've all played that card at some point...

10 Merida, Brave

via: pinterest.com

In this wonderful artwork by Tumblr user Punziella, we don't just get one interpretation of a college-age Merida from Brave: we get two! While this version of our favorite Scottish princess has left her trademark bow and arrow behind, she's still totally recognizable. For one, she's still got her mane of ginger curls! Merida also seems to have adopted a practical-but-cute sense of style that has a few callbacks to her Disney persona. The leather jackets and boots, for example, are exactly what we'd expect of this cool, slightly rebellious young woman. Merida could definitely still kick some butt if she needed to.

Question is, what college degree would this version of Merida study? She seems to be a little bit hipster—check out her Beatles T-shirt in the right-hand image. Could she have chosen a creative subject like Fine Art or Photography? Or is she going with the "traditional" royal route of Politics to prepare for her future role as leader of her clansmen? Whatever the case, Merida would definitely approach her work with the ferocity we'd expect from her. Hopefully, she doesn't go around accidentally transforming the people that annoy her into bears, though. That'd be a little bit awkward.

9 Moana, Moana

via: sophiesmile.deviantart.com

Moana may be one of the more recent Disney characters to hit our screens, but there are already plenty of modern interpretations of her out there! DeviantArt's SophieSmile created this perfect piece, which neatly showcases what Moana of Motunui would look like if she was a 21st-century college gal. It's simple, yet effective! While Moana's jeans-and-cute-top combo is most definitely modern, there's a clever callback to her original Disney outfit hidden in this piece. Did you notice the choker with the glistening green jewel hanging off it? That's totally the Heart of Te Fiti! Even in her college years, Moana hasn't forgotten that the ocean chose her.

In fact, we can see Moana cherishing her connection to the world's oceans so much that she uses her college years to learn more about them. Of course, she'll have chosen to study at a university that's near the sea—and has probably set up a sailing and wayfinding club! Maybe Moana studies Marine Biology like Ariel, in an attempt to fully understand the creatures that populate the seas! Or perhaps she spends her time campaigning for conservation groups, to stop her beloved ocean from being filled with plastic. One thing's for sure: whatever she does, Moana will be making her grandma proud.  No, YOU'RE crying!

8 Pocahontas, Pocahontas

via: ailinne.deviantart.com

If there's any Disney Princess who'd be a full-blown on-campus campaigner, it's Pocahontas. She'll be that girl who yells at everyone within a 20-foot radius as they're trying to avoid her gaze and scuttle to class. Pocahontas is persistent, though: she won't rest until all of her fellow students have heard her impassioned speech about painting with all the colors of the wind. Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? HAVE YOU? No?

Then sign this Greenpeace petition!

All in all, DeviantArt user Ailinne has totally nailed it in this college-age depiction of Pocahontas. She's still got her trademark tattoo on her upper arm, and her flowing ebony hair makes her clearly recognizable. No matter what it is that Pocahontas actually studies, you know that it's her charity work and activism that actually takes up most of her time. This artwork perfectly encapsulates the character's love of nature, and her determination to stop anything that threatens her beloved animals. You'd better hope that Grandmother Willow doesn't ever become a victim of deforestation: Pocahontas would be at the culprit's door with a lawsuit in the click of a finger. Also, one question: has Meeko joined Pocahontas on her college adventure? There's no reason why he shouldn't—it's not like raccoons are unusual critters to see around the place...

7 Astrid And Hiccup, How To Train Your Dragon

via: pinterest.com

Finally—some art that features everyone's favorite How To Train Your Dragon couple, Hiccup and Astrid! The whole "childhood sweethearts" thing that these two have going on is just too cute for words. Thing is, would this teenage love survive all of the stresses that college life can bring? We certainly hope so! The movies have shown that this couple can make it through pretty much anything—including near-fatal experiences, Hiccup losing a leg, and a whole load of scary adventures.

Four years of college should be a breeze for them!

Sharkie19 on DeviantArt has created this interpretation of a very happy-looking Hiccup and Astrid just casually chilling out on campus, and we're totally sold. For one, you've got to love Astrid's blatantly medieval-inspired outfit. Sure, she and Hiccup aren't dressing like fully-fledged Vikings anymore, but there are still some touches that hark back to their heritage! It's unclear where Toothless and Stormfly, the couple's dragons, are—they're probably not the most practical pets to bring to college. Still, at least these two have each other. So many romantic "study dates" had better be taking place... And maybe some actual studying too. Hiccup needs to broaden his mind if he's going to be an effective Chief of the Hairy Hooligans!

6 Mike And Sulley, Monsters Inc.

via: pinterest.com

Although we technically got an entire movie of the much-loved Monsters Inc. characters Mike and Sulley attending college, we're always down for some fan art that imagines what these guys would look like if they were human. Plus, we're interested to know if these guy's human counterparts would have a slightly more successful time at college compared to their monster forms! In Monsters University, both Mike and Sulley end up getting expelled from their Scaring degree courses for breaking all manner of rules. This is after Mike generally struggled with both his academic and social life, and Sulley joined a fraternity. Would this happen if they were human?

In this fan art by an unknown artist (let us know if it's you!), Mike and Sulley do actually look surprisingly like their movie counterparts. Sulley is still a tough guy who definitely looks like fraternity material, and his hair is dyed in his iconic fur colors! Mike is, of course, considerably smaller than his best buddy, and only one of his eyes is visible. Maybe he still only has one eye as a human? We don't know. Whatever the case, we think this art does a pretty good job of capturing these characters' personalities. Let's be honest, they still look like the kind of rulebreakers who'd get kicked out of school!
