5th Cell’s Castlehold, a competitive strategy game, is now available on PC via Steam Early Access. The free-to-play game, from the developers of Scribblenauts, takes players to an alternate universe created a tear in the space-time continuum.

The game’s synopsis reads, “When a cataclysmic event shatters space and time, champions from all eras of history find themselves struggling to survive in a mysterious realm known as the Drift. Recruit knights, cowgirls, druids, buccaneers, samurai, Vikings, futuristic cybers soldiers, and a myriad of other heroes. Command the ultimate Warband and vie for power in this strange new world.”

In the game, players take part in strategic one-on-one battles, enlist fighters and captains, and master the Active Resource Control (ARC) system by overtaking settlements and exploiting their gold. The resources can then be used to recruit select warriors who will be used to seize your opponent’s castle.

A combination of strategy and deck building, the game has been created for rapid pick-up-and-play sessions with more than 300 units, five captains, and more additions. Players can practice with squads before entering battle, taking part in friendly, casual, or ranked matches. They can also obtain currents by defeating rivals and use their earnings to enlist new units.

5th Cell, an indie studio founded in by Joseph M. Tringali, Jeremiah Slaczka and Marius Falhbusch, is best known for the Scribblenauts franchise, an emergent puzzle action game series published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for the Nintendo DS in 2009. The success of the first game led to numerous sequels, including Super Scribblenauts, Scribblenauts Remix, and Scribblenauts Unlimited. The series has sold more than 13 million copies worlwide.

In 2015, 5th Cell attempted to fund their new project Anchors in the Drift via crowdfunding website fig.co. The game was expected to be a free-to-play action-RPG, but the developers failed to reach their funding goal of $500,000 and plans for the game were scrapped. On March 24, 2016, following the cancellation of the mobile game Scribblenauts: Fighting Words by publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the studio suffered numerous layoffs.
