Konami has announced there’s a new Castlevania game in development.

But it’s only for the iPhone. And it’s only in Japan.

Konami must be a little gun-shy with the Castlevania franchise after the Lords of Shadow series didn’t quite generate the amount of hype (and more importantly, sales) as the company would have liked. Rather than make a new Castlevania for a current and exciting console, like say, the Nintendo Switch, they’ve decided to keep things close to home with a mobile game that will only be available in Japan. So far.

The new game is to be called Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls. The game’s website is only in Japanese, but through the power of Google Translate, we can get a good idea of just what this game is all about.

Grimoire of Souls takes place following the events of 2005’s Dawn of Sorrow for the Nintendo DS, which is quite a throwback. Genya Arikado, an agent for a mysterious Japanese government agency, receives a letter that says: “The Grimoire has run wild and Count Dracula will be resurrected.” He then sets out to search for the sender of that letter, fearing that Dracula may once again be attempting a resurrection.

From there we don’t know much about the plot, but the screens seem to show the player in control of Alucard, Dracula’s son, and Charlotte, a young witch who first showed up in Portrait of Ruin--another Nintendo DS title.

The site also lists Simon, Shanoa, and Maria as playable characters, although there’s no mention as to how they fit into the plot, as well as a new character named Lucy. She’s described as “a female researcher who works for a research organization in the fight against Dracula. Despite her young age, she is a highly competent research magician and supports Arikado and company in battle through the Grimoire. Arikado and company are staying at her laboratory."

There’s also a co-op mode, 4-player boss rush, and 4v4 competitive.

If you speak Japanese, then you can sign up for the closed beta on their website. Lucky testers will get access to the beta via email starting mid-May. Who knows? If it works out then maybe Castlevania will have that resurrection after all.
