We knew even before the release of Castlevania Season 4 that Netflix was exploring the possibility of a new Castlevania show, but now we've got confirmation that a Castlevania spinoff has been greenlit. It'll have new characters and a new setting, be set in the same universe, but original showrunner and writer Warren Ellis won't be involved.

Geeked Week's final day started off with the Castlevania spinoff confirmation and precious few other details. We know that instead of Simon, this new Castlevania show will star Richter Belmont, the son of Sypha and Trevor Belmont, alongside Maria Renard. It'll also be set in 1792 France during the French Revolution.

Old school Castlevania fans will recognize these scant details as the setting for Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, the very first game to feature Richter Belmont. That game was initially released in Japan back in 1993 on the PC Engine before making its way to the SNES in 1995 under the name Castlevania: Dracula X.

Richter and Maria have also appeared in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Castlevania: Nocturne of Reflection, and Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.

However, judging by the way Season 4 of Netflix’s Castlevania ended, it seems unlikely that the Castlevania spinoff will follow the same plot as Rondo of Blood. With Dracula on his second honeymoon and Death dead, a lot of the big story beats for Rondo of Blood don’t seem to make sense in the Netflix Castlevania canon.

Netflix did not provide a release window, so we’re likely going to have to wait a bit on this one.

On the other hand, Cowboy Bebop is coming in the fall, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness releases on July 8, and Witcher Season 2 should be “coming soon,” with more details coming on July 9. More big announcements are expected today as Netflix concludes its Geeked Week, so stay tuned.
