Chained Echoes features a system that lets one of your party members, Tomke, eat enemies to learn their skills. If this sounds familiar to you, it's because Chained Echoes loves to pay homage to old-school JRPGs from the SNES era.

What Are Cannable Enemies?

Chained Echoes - Tomke using the Uncanny Encounter skill on an enemy

As you play through Chained Echoes you will surely notice some enemies in battle have a status next to them that reads 'Cannable' with a tick or a cross in the box next to it. If you're just starting, this won't mean anything to you. Cannable enemies are related to an optional party member you recruit later in the game called Tomke.

Tomke will Can enemies in Chained Echoes, which means he will eat them. If you're a genius, you might've figured out that the whole system is a clever play on words. Cannable, cannibal, get it? Either way, Cannable enemies are how you learn battle skills for Tomke.

Until you eat an enemy, he won't have any offensive skills save for whatever Class Emblem you put on him and his Uncanny Encounter ability.

How To Unlock Tomke

Arkant Archipelago as seen on the Airship Map in Chained Echoes

Tomke can be unlocked at the start of Act Two in Chained Echoes. You'll know when you're at this point in the game because there will be a three-month time skip, and you will unlock the Airship and Sky Armor to explore the world more.

When you have your Airship, fly from Hermit's Isle to the Arkant Archipelago. Once you land, you can trigger a side quest called The Food, The Chap, And The Hungry. You can't miss it, just look for a goat-looking person in a yellow coat standing by the town you first land in. Completing this side quest will unlock an area called The Hooge, as well as Tomke as a party member.

Now let the feast begin as you hunt down Cannable enemies.
