Chaosium recently announced the creative team members who will be developing the upcoming Rivers of London Roleplaying Game. The team of six elite writers come from a variety of tabletop RPG production backgrounds, each with an admirable list of previous accomplishments on their resume.

ICYMI, Chaosium announced the acquisition of the rights to produce the Rivers of London Roleplaying Game in November 2019. The RPG is based on the best-selling urban fantasy fiction Rivers of London series by author Ben Aaronovitch. The fiction series features constable-turned-magician’s apprentice Peter Grant who “solves crimes across London in a sensational blend of inventive urban fantasy, gripping mystery thriller, and hilarious fantasy caper.“

The Rivers of London RPG is using Chaosium’s excellent Basic Roleplaying System (BRP) along with original rules in order to best represent the fantasy elements portrayed in the fiction series. The RPG will follow much the same path as the novels, taking place in the world of Folly, where the rivers themselves are able to wield magic just as the ghostly creatures who inhabit the realm do.

The above photo shows the Rivers of London creative team that Chaosium has brought together. In alphabetical order, the team members are Paul Fricker (Rivers of London RPG core rules designer & writer), Adam Gauntlett (The Escapist, Atlas Games, Pelgrane), Lloyd Gyan (Bastion and Liminal RPGs), Lynne Hardy (Rivers of London RPG Line Editor), Gavin Inglis (Call of Cthulhu RPG Alone Against the Flames), Keris McDonald (Worlds of Cthulhu, The Cthulhu Hack), Helena Nash (an original developer of cult film & television game 7TV), and Lucya Szachnowski (Call of Cthulhu RPG The Investigator’s Companion and Keeper’s Compendium).

The team’s individual and collective achievements are too long to list fully here, but you can read them in the Rivers of London announcement. Noticeably missing from the announcement is word on why the creative team is just now being disclosed, nine months after the initial Chaosium news. It’s of course imaginable the current COVID-19 pandemic had its part in causing the delay.

Aside from being ported into novellas and numerous comic book series’ across 14 languages, and now a tabletop roleplaying game, the Rivers of London tale may also be close to becoming a TV series. The Stolen Picture production company, the brainchild of actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Truth Seekers) acquired Rivers of London TV rights in May 2019.
