It seems that one of the greatest video games of all time is about to reach a much wider platform than it has had in the past, as Chrono Trigger is now available to purchase on Steam.

Square Enix made the surprise announcement through a YouTube trailer today that Chrono Trigger is now available on Steam for $15/£12. The version of the game is the one that was released on mobile phones, which means that the UI was changed in order to make the game playable on a smaller screen. This means that the large font of the original Super Nintendo version of the game has been replaced with one that is far uglier, as well as the menus being altered to make them more compact.

The Steam version of Chrono Trigger comes with some of the benefits of the other special editions of the game. It will have the animated cutscenes from the PlayStation release of the game, as well as the two post-game dungeons (the Dimensional Vortex and the Lost Sanctum) of Chrono Trigger DS. It doesn't seem to possess the Arena of Ages mode from Chrono Trigger DS, though that was an unpopular addition to the game, so its absence won't be mourned.

It's unusual that Square Enix didn't promote the Steam release of Chrono Trigger at all, considering how popular the game is. Chrono Trigger is often seen in "Best Video Games Of All Time" lists and is commonly placed on the number one spot. Chrono Trigger was made by three of the greatest video game developers/artists of the 16-bit era (Hironobu Sakaguchi of Final Fantasy fame, Yuji Horii of Dragon Quest game, and Akira Toriyama, who created Dragon Ball Z) and is considered to be a masterpiece of the RPG genre.

It's also odd that Square Enix waited this long to make a PC port of Chrono Trigger, as it was one of the most popular games that were downloaded during the early days of Super Nintendo emulation. The fact that Chrono Trigger wasn't released in Europe meant that many fans were forced to use illegal means in order to play the game. This meant that Chrono Trigger earned a reputation through word of mouth, which eventually led to the DS port of the game seeing an international release. The Steam release of Chrono Trigger means that fans can now enjoy the game legally on their PCs.

Chrono Trigger is available to purchase now on Steam.
