Cult-classic shoot ‘em up Ikaruga is coming to the Nintendo Switch.

If you’re a shooter fan, then you already know about Treasure’s classic bullet-hell game, Ikaruga. The game was a one-of-a-kind shooter that redefined the genre. Whereas every game prior had some sort of power-up system, Ikaruga got rid of all that extraneous stuff and boiled down the game to a core of dodge, shoot, and flip.

The flipping is the most important part. In Ikaruga there’s a system that will absorb enemy bullets so long as your ship is the right color--either light or dark. If you’re shot with light bullets while you’re a light ship you absorb those bullets to shoot them back later as an all-powerful special attack. But if you try to absorb dark bullets as a light ship you take damage.

There’s more of course, like an incredible musical score and art style that remains unique to shooters, but at its core Ikaruga is won or lost on the color flipping mechanic.

The game was developed by Japanese indie dev Treasure for arcades back in 2001. It was met with mixed opinions at its initial release but gained a cult following when it eventually got ported to the Sega Dreamcast in 2002. It even got some praise in the West where folks imported the Japan-only game to get their hands on what was reported to be the greatest shoot-’em-up of all time. They weren’t disappointed.

In 2003, Ikaruga finally got an official North American and European release on the Nintendo GameCube. Then in 2007 the game made its way to Xbox 360 on the Xbox Live Arcade. Then in 2014 the game finally found its way to PC via a release on Steam.

Now Ikaruga is coming to the game console du jour, the Nintendo Switch. This is a game that will simply not die.

The Switch version will come with three game difficulties and two game modes: Arcade and Prototype. Prototype actually evolves the absorption system to not only charge your special attack but also provide you with just regular ammunition. It was cut from the final release as making an already difficult game virtually impossible. So good luck with that.

You’ll also be able to play Ikaruga in horizontal or vertical mode as it was played back in the arcade. Just turn your Switch to portrait mode and take off the Joy-Cons.

Ikaruga comes to Switch May 29th for $14.99.
