Were you out grinding alone? Running a dungeon with your buddies? In town turning in a quest? Everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when their main hit 60.

Players of the modern version of the game who level their players well past 60 and often in much less time don't understand the thrill that comes with hitting 60. That's right, you win World of Warcraft! Except that you don't. Now, the real work begins. Here are ten things that you discover when you hit that level cap.

10 The Hydraxian Waterlords

The who and the what now? You'd probably never find these guys unless one of your guild officers mentions it in relation to the Molten Core raid. In order to summon one of the last bosses in the raid, at least 8 members of the party have to have a certain reputation level with the sworn enemy of Ragnaros and his minions, the Hydraxian Waterlords. You find these guys out on a tiny, isolated island off the coast of Azshara and their quests will take you to the far-flung corners of Azeroth.

9 Epic Mount Quest

You were so excited about the mount you got at level 40, remember? You'll never ride it again now that you have an epic mount. Most of the epic mounts that drop from bosses, like the Swift Zulian Tiger, require level 60 anyway, but this is the upgraded version of the racial mount that anyone can get provided they have the reputation, money, and training. The level 60 mount is much faster but also a lot more expensive, with a price tag of 800 to 1000 gold. So it takes about 60 levels to save the money anyway.

8 Timbermaw Hold Rep Grind

You started these quests and probably finished the initial chains a long time ago, but now is when you grab a few friends and lay waste to whole villages for nothing more than beads, feathers and reputation points. These elusive furries live in the northern zones of Felwood and possess some valuable recipes for alchemists and patterns for tailors, but you can only speak to the Timbermaw and buy their wares after you reach a certain reputation level. It's the most notorious reputation grind in the game and it doesn't really ramp up until you're level 60.

7 Dreadsteeds and Chargers

Four Dreadsteeds in a row, warlock epic mount, WoW

We know that all of the classes have access to an epic level mount, but these two classes have a special mount just for them that deserves a paragraph all its own. This isn't the breeze that the level 40 mount is, however. Both mounts are only attained after a long and expensive quest chain is completed. Warlocks and Paladins have to run endgame dungeons, go searching for expensive mats and rare potions, and finally grab some friends and venture into Dire Maul and contact beings from another world. It's pretty thrilling and you can only do this at level 60.

6 The Tale of Tirion

When you hit level 50, you went riding past that Bulwark just to take a look, but you still had to be careful. At level 60, after you've ridden through the Plaguelands, you know more about the tragic stories that make up one of the most desolate and dangerous places in all of Azeroth. A mysterious hermit living in a lonely cabin near a river can tell you a lot more about it. In fact, he'll make you a sidekick in what is essentially his redemption arc. Tirion Fordring's quests are available as low as level 54 but you aren't likely to finish them until level 60.

5 The Reins of the Deathcharger

If you actually see this drop and you aren't level 60, you can bet the gods of Azeroth hate you right down to your guts. It's not likely you'll ever see it drop again, either.

Only players at level 60 can equip and use the Deathcharger, and if you roll on that thing without being 60 you'll get a stink-eye from your party members that would make Stitches blush. Yeah, we'd roll on it anyway, too.

4 Epic Gear

Remember when you saw your first green item drop in Elwynn Forest, and how exciting it was? Now you're ditching your blues for those coveted Professor Plums. Epic items are known for their distinctive purple color, insane stats, and most of all, the level you need to equip them. The vast majority of epic items require a level 60 toon, and that includes most of the best PVP items that you can only get with a certain title.

3 "Wait, does someone have a key?"

Sometimes it's not about attunement or reputation or the link in a quest chain. In a callback to classic RPG and adventure games, several dungeons at level 60 require a key to get in. We're not using the term "key" as an expression, it's an actual key that opens the door to the dungeon. No matter how epic your gear is or how elite of a player you are, you're not getting into Scholomance, the upper part of Blackrock Depths, or the Servant's Entrance of Undead Stratholme without a key. Most of the quests to get these keys are available to players in the later 50s, but since you usually need 5 level 60s to complete the elite quests or kill the bosses required, you probably won't have that key until level 60.

2 Onyxia Attunement

You've probably seen her head on display somewhere in your faction's capital city already, and soon it'll be your turn to harvest the head of the notorious Onyxia. The equally epic quest chain rewards you an important trinket that allows you to enter Black Wing Lair, the dragon's smoldering sanctuary. The Alliance quests for this attunement start at level 54, with the last few quests requiring level 60. The Horde side of this equation doesn't start until level 60 with a quest you find in Kargath.

That's your cue. Not to run to the nearest friendly city or lay low in case enemies were nearby, like back in your earlier levels, but now it's your job to run into the fray instead of trying to escape it. That's not just the warnings that automatically pop up in the general chat, but lower level players asking for help. You'll be out minding your own business, farming herbs or fishing, when a hapless level 25 calls out on the zone chat or maybe even whispers you. You can't say no when it happens, you're a 'leet level 60!
