Whodunnit? Clue, the classic tabletop mystery board game, has been asking that question since the early 1940s. The murder mystery game was developed during World War II air raids in the U.K., according to Mental Floss, and made its way to the U.S. in 1949. For just over 70 years, players have put on their figurative detective hats and attempted to solve who killed Mr. Boddy, how they did it, and where it happened.

Of course, Clue has been reincarnated to fit the themes of pop culture films, video games, television shows, and more over the years. The crime isn't always murder; solving the mystery can range from finding a missing person to finding who ate the last slice of cheesecake. Let's take a look at some of the most beloved editions of Clue.

Updated on January 21st, 2021 by Patrick Mocella: Just when you think you know the board game Clue, you discover a brand new world of possibilities. Being right up there with Monopoly as a contender for the most popular tabletop game ever made, Clue has been given almost as many special editions as Monopoly. These include everything from sitcoms to cartoons to dramas to sci-fi fantasies and everything in between. We'll look at a few more of these unique variants here. While some of these editions add new twists to the familiar formula, other ones simply play like classic Clue with a new skin over it.

15 The Simpsons Edition

The Simpsons is notorious for its parodies and its willingness to pay homage to pop culture on the show, so it makes perfect sense that it would make a Clue-esque episode. They haven't yet, but this is good enough.

Players control Homer, Marge, Krusty, Lisa, Bart and Mr.Smithers to find out who killed Mr.Burns at what location in Springfield and with what weapon. The game is almost an alternate universe where the iconic "Who Shot Mr.Burns?" episode was re-skinned into a board game.

14 The Office Edition

the office clue game

Michael Scott from The Office is notorious for forcing his employees to engage in ridiculous hijinks so it tracks that he would corral them into a game of Clue.

In this game, Michael's nemesis Toby has apparently been murdered and the office must discover who killed him, with what weapon and where. This version of Clue also adds "intrigue" cards found in some versions of the game as well as "personality" cards that allow for a one-time special power. A little more depth to Clue and a great TV show is a good combo.

13 The Big Bang Theory Edition

As one of the most popular sitcoms of the 2010s, The Big Bang Theory was due for a version of Clue. The result is a fun hybrid that brings one of the most interesting story variants on Clue.

Instead of solving a murder, the "detectives" must figure out who defiled one of Sheldon's personal belonging and in which location. This edition also includes the "intrigue" cards from previous games which can give you more power on your dice roll, give you an extra turn and more.

12 Seinfeld Edition

It's not brought up very often, but Seinfeld actually does have quite a few scenes that show Jerry and his dates/friends playing classic tabletop games like Chess, Battleship and more. So why not make a Seinfeld version of Clue?

Instead of murder, Newman is plotting to distribute a newsletter full of embarrassing stories about Jerry, Kramer, George, Elaine, Puddy and Mr.Peterman on his mail route. Players have to find out who knocked out Newman with what weapon and where the newsletters are being held. The game includes "intrigue" cards as well for a little extra spice in this game and yada yada yada it's Seinfeld Clue.

11 Scooby Doo Edition

An obvious pairing of a cartoon and a board game if we've ever seen one, Clue is splashed together with Scooby-Doo! in this game which makes for a perfect combo for fans of either franchise.

Instead of trying to point out a murderer, this game tasks players with finding out which of their friends were abducted in a haunted house, in which room and what evidence was left behind. The game plays largely like classic Clue but with both "intrigue" cards and "personality" cards present to throw a little bit of extra hijinks into the game.

10 The Legend Of Zelda Edition

The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition of Clue was released in 2017, the same year that Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was remastered for the Nintendo Switch. In this version of the mystery game, the Dark Lord Ganondorf steals the Triforce, and only one person can stop him from trying to rule the world. It's up to players to find out who has the power to defeat him, what weapon will take him down, and where Ganondorf has hidden his lair.

This edition of Clue adds Boss Encounter cards that have the potential to immediately boot a player from the game. Each character also has a special power that players can call on once during gameplay.

9 The Twilight Zone: Tower Of Terror Edition

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Clue, released in 2007, was the second Disney Theme Parks Clue game to come in a unique tin box. This rare tabletop adventure was only sold at Disney resorts and theme parks, but fans can find it on eBay today from various sellers. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Daisy, and Pete appear as cast members.

The game's story takes place during a movie shoot at the Hollywood Tower Hotel. Lightning strikes the building, causing one of the cast or crew members to disappear. Players must figure out who went missing along with a movie prop, and where they disappeared from.

8 The Nightmare Before Christmas Edition

Based closely on the classic Tim Burton film, Clue: The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 2016 and sends players on a mission to find out what happened to Sandy Claws. He was kidnapped, but who took him and where did they go? And what tool did the kidnappers use to take him?

The game comes with an exclusive board map detailing Halloween Town, plus markers and playing cards based on characters in the film.

7 Supernatural Collector's Edition

Clue Supernatural hit shelves in the same year that Season 10 aired, 2014. In this thrilling story, one of the characters — Sam, Dean, Castiel, Bobby, Crowley, or Charlie — has been possessed by Abaddon and opened the gateway to Hell. Players set out to discover which character was possessed, what mystical item they used to open the gate, and where the gate was opened.

The board map includes different regions of the United States. In addition, extra cards are included in the deck to add more rules, but these cards are optional.

6 Game Of Thrones Edition

A special edition Game of Thrones Clue was released in 2016. Unlike other Clue games, this one featured a double-sided board, so fans could choose to play in The Red Keep or Meereen. The plot is pretty much the same as Clue Classic, though: someone has been murdered, and players must figure out who did it, how, and where. With 12 total suspects, players have plenty of options.

5 Star Wars Edition

In this 2016 Clue Star Wars Edition, players are transported to a civil war period. The game takes place on the infamous Death Star, where the goal is to figure out which planet Darth Vader plans to destroy next. Additionally, players must discover where the Death Star plans are stashed, and which vehicle will be used for an escape.

This special edition Clue game comes with 5 cardboard pieces that come together to form a unique, round, 3-D game board designed to look just like the Death Star.

4 The Golden Girls Edition

Perhaps one of the more lighthearted pop culture Clue games is The Golden Girls edition, which was released alongside a Golden Girls Monopoly game in 2018.  There's no murder or kidnapping or world domination plans to thwart; instead, players must figure out who ate the last slice of cheesecake, what evidence they left behind, and where the "crime" occurred.

Key suspects include, of course, the four Golden Girls — Blanche, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia — plus Stan and Miles. The board includes small details that hardcore fans will recognize from the show, such as playing cards on Sophia's dresser.

3 Haunted Mansion Edition

Released in 2002, Clue Haunted Mansion was the first Disney Theme Parks Clue game to appear in a tin box. Like the Tower of Terror Edition, this game was sold exclusively at Disney resorts and theme parks. However, a cheaper version of the Haunted Mansion Edition was later boxed in cardboard and sold in regular toy stores.

The story puts an interesting spin on original gameplay. Players must figure out which Disney character got scared by which ghost in the mansion (instead of the typical "which weapon" question), and where the character was frightened. Plus, the ghost figurines glow in the dark, so that's pretty fun.

2 Harry Potter Edition

The Clue Harry Potter Edition was released in 2008 between the fifth and sixth films in the franchise. When someone performs dark magic at Hogwarts, a student suddenly vanishes. Players must discover who performed the dark magic, with what spell, and where they attacked the missing student.

This game features another unique board, where players can actually change the layout via wheels on the bottom. The changes reveal secret passageways, trap doors, and more. Players also have the ability to collect House points and receive Help cards.

1 CLUE Classic Edition

Spin-offs are great, but nothing beats the original. That's why Clue Classic is our No. 1 best version. The classic murder mystery has been remastered several times since 1949, including a 50th anniversary edition in 1999 with extra weapons. Clue Master Detective in 1988 also added four new characters to the list of suspects.
