Colossi Games, a mobile game developer based in Cyprus, has raised $2.5 million in a seed funding round led by EQT Ventures to develop its first title, an untitled social survival game set in Ancient Rome.

Colossi, founded by a team of gaming industry veterans from companies like Nexters, Game Insight, Nival and mail.ru, aims to create “genre-defining games by combining socially engaging elements with familiar mechanics to create enticing and unique gameplay experiences daily for a midcore audience.”

"Having worked at various different corporate games companies across Europe and Russia, we saw the gap in the market to create a more social RPG game,” Manuel Prueter, CEO and co-founder of Colossi Games said.

"We strongly believe the future is social, and we strive to make a significant genre impact on innovation in this regard. This new funding will enable us to bring the game to life in a more advanced state and create more game-changing entertainment," he added.

Prueter began his games career at NCSoft's Brighton office in 2005. While working on Planet of Heroes, a MOBA mobile game developed by Fast Forward Studio and published by My.com, as a producer, he met his future brother-in-law Andrey Panfilov, the lead game designer on Nexters' Hero Wars, an RPG fantasy adventure game available on desktop and mobile. The two got on so well that they decided to found Colossi Games.

The new game, expected to be the first-ever social survival game on mobile devices, is an RPG multiplayer hybrid set in the days of the Roman Empire that will allow players to immerse themselves in mythical lore as they explore the realm. Players can also join forces and face off against opponents in the Colosseum.

Colossi Games, which was founded in early 2020, currently employs ten people. Last August, the developer raised $650,000 in pre-seed funding. So far, Play Ventures, a games VC founded by games entrepreneurs that invests globally in games and game services startups, has made 14 investments.
