Conan Exiles Developer Funcom Wants To Make Games Set In Dune Universe

Fans of Dune are getting spoiled as of late. A film adaptation has been announced for 2020 with Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve at the helm, and has a cast that includes Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista and many others. It might even have Zendaya! Now it seems a video game based in the Dune universe is on the way as well.

Funcom, the studio behind Conan Exiles, has just announced that it is going to make games set in Frank Herbert’s spice obsessed world. The developers revealed the deal they’ve made with Legendary Studios during a financial report for investors on their website.

The studio has entered into a six year partnership with Legendary, and will produce three games for both PC and consoles. They also made sure to specify that one of the games will be some kind of “open world multiplayer” game that will be beginning its pre-production this year. Whether this multiplayer game will be some kind of MMO or a live service game in the vein of Destiny or Anthem is uncertain at this point. Fingers crossed that it will involve competitive sand worm racing.

Funcom is of course the studio behind games like The Secret World, which was a MMO set in the real world but involving supernatural monsters and secret societies. Recently, the studio may be best known for Conan Exiles, a game set in the world of Conan The Barbarian. Of course most people may know that game less for its gameplay, and more for its customization options for your character’s dangly bits.

It's an interesting choice to handle the Dune license, as Funcom has experience adapting existing properties into massive multiplayer games. It’s highly likely that these Dune games will be similar in some ways to The Secret World or Conan Exiles. Funcom has had some mixed success with their games, with The Secret World being viewed as a fairly alright MMO. Meanwhile, Conan Exiles seemed to be viewed as mostly mediocre and forgettable, aside from the aforementioned risqué character creation options.

Still though, Dune fans are getting a lot of love these days. With a new movie from a critically acclaimed director, and a game that promises to let you wander around the deserts of Arrakis they’re definitely getting more than they could have dreamed of. The game probably shouldn’t be expected for quite some time as pre-production has only just begun, but hopefully the game will turn out to be a great experience.

And if it’s not, well it’s not like Dune fans aren’t used to disappointment already.
