The nominees for this year's Gamescom awards are in, and an unassuming PS4 exclusive is leading the way with more nominations than any other title.

Gamescom week has begun - well, not officially as the convention in Cologne, Germany technically doesn't begin until later today (Monday, August 19, 2019). That being said, both Microsoft and Google will be revealing oodles of news regarding the Xbox and Stadia this afternoon, some of which will already be out there by the time you read this.

One of the most fun things about Gamescom each year is the awards ceremony. Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we now know this year's nominees. Unsurprisingly, many of the big games being released over the course of the next nine months feature regularly. Borderlands 3, for example, has been nominated for three awards; best action game, best Microsoft Xbox One game, and best PC game.

Borderlands 3 isn't the game with the most nominations this year, though. That goes to a lesser-known but still hotly-anticipated Playstation 4 exclusive, Concrete Genie. While the action-adventure game, which is slated for release this October, might have surprised many with its nomination domination, it won't have come as a shock to most in the industry. It was also one of the best-reviewed games at this year's E3.

Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening has also been nominated a fair few times. Considering the success of Breath of the Wild, we're not surprised in the slightest. If the remaster is even half as good as the last Zelda title we got on the Switch, it will thoroughly deserve all of the rewards coming its way. It'll need to prove itself to be better than Pokémon Sword and Shield to win the award for Switch game of the year, though.

The Gamescom awards are naturally one of the last things on the agenda for what will be an action-packed week filled with news and reveals. The winners will be announced this Saturday, August 24, 2019, at 3:30 pm local time, so 10:30 am EST. Between now and then, those in attendance at Gamescom are able to vote in a number of categories, including best booth and best esports experience.
