For the longest time, it seemed as though consoles and PC remained totally independent from another. Whether you were part of a console generation or the “PC master race,” the competition between the two forms of gaming have always been debated and fought over who reigns supreme. Despite this rivalry, the introduction of Bluetooth connectivity in the last ten years has brought some convenient and game-changing benefits to both forms of entertainment.

One of the most notable forms of this collaboration is the ability to link controllers to be used on the PC. In particular, Xbox controllers have been a fantastic alternative to a mouse and keyboard, and due to Xbox being owned by Microsoft, the process for connection is quite streamlined and easy. This process is mainly focused on the Xbox One wireless controllers connecting to a Windows 10 operating system, but the process is quite similar for any instance of needing to connect.

5 Turn On The Controller

The most simple step of the bunch is to simply turn the controller on. Making sure it’s properly and fully charged is a must by plugging in the charge cable to either the Xbox console or a charger of any compatible kind. Once charged, press the big Xbox button on the front to turn the controller on, and it will flash a light to notify you that it’s active.

4 Press The Pair Button

After the controller is turned on, press and hold the Pair button. This button is located on the top of the controller, close to the USB charge port.

Now that you know what this button is actually for, press and hold it for 3 seconds until the Xbox button in the middle of the controller begins to rapidly flash. This is the signal that your controller is ready to be paired.

3 PC Settings

Now that your controller is ready to paired, bring up your Microsoft Windows 10 OS. Press the Start button in the bottom left corner, and in the submenu that appears, click Settings -> Devices -> Bluetooth & Other Devices.

Once in the menu, turn Bluetooth on, and you will be able to add any device you’d like to your PC that is Bluetooth enabled. It is recommended that you only connect one Xbox controller to your PC at a time, but multiple controllers may still be functional.

2 Search For Controller And Connect

Press Add Bluetooth Or Other Device -> Bluetooth, and since your controller is now in pairing mode, your PC should be able to detect your controller. Once the two have found each other, in the Bluetooth connectivity menu, the controller should appear as either Xbox Wireless Controller or Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, depending on the model you are trying to connect. When finished, press Done and grab your Xbox controller.

At this point, take your newly connected Xbox wireless controller and boot up Steam, your game streaming services, or even your favorite emulator, and calibrate your new Xbox controller to play any game you want through your PC!
