Let's face it. We are only human. That is to say, we make mistakes. Nobody is perfect no matter how collected one seems. This can be applied to video games too. As time has gone on since the simple days of the Atari 2600 and NES, games have become more complicated, which is good. The better technology becomes, the better our gaming experiences will be. That's theoretical, of course, because indie games still come out as callbacks to the early days and are still great, but you get my point. So with that knowledge at the end, it has also become commonplace for games to get patches. It started last generation for the Xbox 360 and PS3 and has only gotten worse with our current systems.

Well, worse in some cases. While it does indeed stink to download a day one patch, sometimes with big numbers, it's also good. Without patches, games may remain broken or imperfect. Its great developers can fix things on the fly from some minor grammatical typos to game breaking bugs. It's the best of times along with the worst of times and that's today's subject. I gathered thirty stories about current console games, mostly, that have had some pretty well-known bugs. Again, some of them are very minor like spelling a word wrong, but they are fun to bring up nonetheless. I'm a writer so I know all too well how one can easily make a grammatical mistake. Let's see if you can spot any of mine in here.

30 Spider-Man’s Not So Perfect New York City

screenshot

Marvel's Spider-Man, or Spider-Man PS4, however you want to say it, was a fantastic game and one I will surely have in my Game of the Year list. As great as it felt swinging through New York City, it did have problems. If you live in NYC, you might be bothered how some areas have been omitted, or how some buildings have been replaced by others for no apparent reason. It was a great first step, but also not quite right.

29 A Dragon Sized Error

screenshot

There's a lot of text in Dragon Quest XI, but fortunately, almost all of it is voiced and voiced well I might add. It's weird that text boxes show up in cutscenes, but that's another issue. My point is that with thousands of lines of dialogue and item descriptions there are bound to be some errors. This forum from Woodus has some great examples in it like not including spaces in sentences or just bad sentence structure. I must have read things too fast to even notice in my playthrough.

28 Valkyria Chronicles’ Real World Ties

PlayStation

This is not for the game proper, but still a mistake worth explaining. In the theme released alongside the PS4 remaster of Valkyria Chroniclers, the map labels the map and key wrong. It uses Europe and European instead of Europa and Europan.

Two worlds at war.

I found out while researching this mistake that it’s not one and is one at the same time. See in Japan they don’t call the area Europa at all. When it got translated, the localizers decided to call it Europa to make it clear this was an alternate universe to avoid possible controversy.

27 Black Ops 4 Gun Typo

Microsoft

In Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, once you reach weapon level fifteen you’ll get this message, “Advanced auto-burst mechanism allows each each successive burst to fire with a shorter delay as the trigger is held down.” The typo there is the extra “each” which is a very minor mistake and one I’m sure has been patched since people found it. I find it hilarious that even this high-budgeted team can make errors. Mistakes can happen even to the millionaires, people.

26 The Many Forms Of Warlocks

Amazon

One of the new powers for the Warlock in Destiny 2 Forsaken has a minor error in the messaging. The Reverie Dawn Bond says in its description, “While in the Dreaming City, you take more damage form all sources.” In that message, “form” should be replaced by “from” which is a mistake I make all the time depending on how quick my fingers type ahead of my brain. Funnily enough, I just wrote “brian" instead of "brain" originally, which also happens a lot. The human mind is odd.

25 What Will Do You?

CGMagazine

Sojiro is a source of great wisdom in Persona 5 even though your relationship starts out rough. Well, he mostly says smart stuff. All except for this. “The cafe’s open for a little while longer. What will do you? I can teach you the ropes.”

He’s not talking about coffee anymore.

In that middle part it should be “what will you do” and not “what will do you” which implies something else. This reminds me of The SpongeBob episode "Pickles" where he forgets how to make a Krabby Patty and asks Mr. Krabs, "Do you how do?"

24 The Phantom Element

Polygon

I totally forgot about this, but there was a special edition gold and red PS4 that came out with the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The message next to the Diamond Dog logo on the console misspelled molybdenum as molybdeum. Molybdenum is an obscure element on the Periodic Table so I bet if you bought one, you didn’t even know. It's still crazy to know you might own a console with a typo for all to see. Can't patch that out.

23 The Missing Ring

SasoedoS YouTube

Patches are meant to take away errors, but sometimes they bring mistakes with them, which is some sort of sick twisted wheel of fate. Anyway, in a patch for Dark Souls 3, there was this. “The Rinfinger Leonhard quest will now start properly after the removal of the restriction on the maximum number of Pale Tongues that can be offered to Rosaria, Mother of Rebirth.” It should be “Ringfinger” and not “Rinfinger” in the notes. Hey, spellcheck fails me too sometimes.

22 Higher Than A Griffin

Imgur

Take a look at the bestiary in The Witcher 3. Go down and examine the entry on the Griffin to find a typo. Well, if it hasn’t been patched out. Anyway, it once read, or still reads, “Though still wary of main roads and towns (where folk with the means to higher a Witcher are likely to dwell).”

I have the high ground!

They should have written “hire” instead of “higher” but I guess higher does make sense too. If you get higher than a Griffin you could also take the advantage, right?

21 Provisions In A Monstrous World

Reddit

Characters in Monster Hunter World have such great names like Handler, Commander, and Provisions Stockpiler. I love the game, the first one in the series to strike a chord with me, but the name situation is awful. Jokes aside, if you talk to the Provisions Stockpiler after completing a certain mission he might say, “ Now only did you finish the Commission’s studies, but you even did the super-secret super-hard stuff.” It should be “not” and not “now” in the beginning.

20 The Final Fantsy

via pinterest.com

When Square Enix was promoting the Final Fantasy X X-2 HD Remaster port to PS4, they made some mistakes in the Japanese promotion of it. You can actually check out the Japanese site that promoted it and see not one, but two images where they label the game as "Final Fantsy" instead of the obvious. Now I can see making some kind of grammatical error in your writing, but when it comes to a game's title, you better make dang sure you are right.

19 To The War Room

Nexus Mods

Dragon Age Inquisition is another RPG with a ton of text so getting something wrong isn’t that hard considering all that BioWare had to deal with. I mean working with EA must be torture. Anyway in the war room mission for “Diverting Soldiers in the Frostbacks” if you highlight Cullen you will see this message in his description.

Come with me if you want to live.

“No one wants to make this call, but if the Red Templars to escape, more people will be harmed. “ It should be “try to escape” as they just forgot one word.

18 You’ve Got Mail

screenshot

In NieR: Automata, you get a lot of emails. Just like in real life, some have errors in them like this one called “Server Manager: Hacking Library” which you’ll get as you progress through the game. At the end of the email, it reads, “Interested parties can access this new library from the sever room of the Bunker.” In this case “sever” should be “server” although “sever” does sound more like a robot thing like some sort of epic email blade.

17 Shadow Of The Letter

screenshot

Shadow of the Tomb Raider came out on September 14 and I quickly beat it in a few quick play sessions. On September 21 I saw Kotaku post about an alternate ending. Basically, a fan, Tombstone, on the official Tomb Raider forums, was wondering why no one was talking about the quick flash of the letter from Jacqueline Natla on Lara's desk, which prompted an argument to break out calling Tombstone a liar. The letter is indeed in the pre-patched 1.0 version of the game. Why did Square Enix take it out? Natla was the antagonist of the first game.

16 You Who?

screenshot

This is the most recent game on the list and perhaps the most baffling as it pertains to a large chunk of the game. In Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokémon: Let’s Go Eevee, when a rival trainer uses an item it will read something like, “You used a potion.”

Who do you voodoo?

If it actually was “you” that would make sense, but why would it say that for a rival? Because the text is so easy to skip through, I missed it while I was playing, but it's certainly there.

15 The Fractured But Whole Indeed

screenshot

Did you wait until the Switch version of South Park: The Fractured But Whole came out this year to play it? I wish I did. I may have enjoyed it a bit more even though it’s a lesser game than its predecessor, but I digress. If you were patient enough to wait, this save glitch was probably even more annoying. So a good amount of Switch players claimed that their game froze up if you went into the D-Mobile store with Call Girl. It even glitched some players' save data. It's been patched since, but that's a big whoops.

14 Looting Dawn

screenshot

This is more an exploit than a mistake in Horizon Zero Dawn. So if you buy loot boxes of any color from merchants, save before opening, and are not satisfied with the results, you can reload your save to get different results. Now in most games, once you purchase something, or perhaps even before, the game makes a dice roll as it were and no matter if you reset, the results will be the same. That’s not the case here letting some players use this exploit to get high gear, sell it, and make a good chunk of cash easily.

13 Street Talking

Fireden

Do you play games with subtitles? Yeah, me either unless I absolutely have to like when a game has foreign speaking roles. Anyway if you were like me and had subtitles turned off on Street Fighter V then you would have missed this mistake.

Akuuuuu…ma!

In one of Akuma’s victory poses, he yells, “Your naivety is simply laughable!” It's pretty obvious, but that should be "simply" instead of just "simple" in his taunt. Maybe not. Broken English can be even more of a taunt, especially in video games.

12 Duplicating Blood

screenshot

It's redundant to say, but the Souls games are hard as heck. I liked the idea of the first three, but it wasn't until Bloodborne that I actually finished a game of this nature. That's because the aesthetic and gameplay just called to me more. That and, well, I may have used an exploit a few times to save on a little grinding. You can read all about the finer details here, but basically, if you made another character and switched back and forth, you could duplicate items. I know, shame on me, but it made me love the game.

11 An Apocalypse Of Caps

Fandom

Fallout 4 was disappointing. It was more Fallout, which I wanted, but a lot more complicated. That is to say, I really didn't like all of the mod and building aspects. You could ignore some of it, but there were also a lot of story missions that required building too. Besides it being a hassle, getting parts, or anything was expensive. That's why I was thankful this money glitch was found. It's probably a mistake on Bethesda's part, but maybe it was a love letter to the fans from a disgruntled developer.
