These games are fun enough on their own. But sometimes gameplay can get a little stale, which is what makes seasonal live events so great, especially around Halloween. Halloween live events often mean tons of spooky new loot like weapons skins and charms, as well as outfits for you to collect.

Sometimes Halloween live events even mean new types of gameplay to try out on your own or with your friends. But the best part of Halloween live events are the creepy makovers your favorite games get. Here are five of the best Halloween events of the year and five you'd be okay to skip over.

10 BEST: Destiny 2: Festival of the Lost

In order to participate in Destiny 2: Festival of the Lost, you'll need to have unlocked The Tower and have at least 770 Power. Once you complete these prerequisites, you'll unlock a quest that tells you you need to go talk to Eva Levante at the Tower. From the Tower, you'll defeat enemies in the Haunted Forest to win special currencies. With these currencies, Candy and Chocolate Strange Coins, you can buy masks, mystery grab bags, and a Braytech Werewolf Legendary Auto Rifle. Destiny 2 knows how to immerse players in the Halloween spirit while handing out tons of cool loot.

9 WORST: Borderlands 3: Bloody Harvest

It seems like "buggy" is just a reoccurring theme with Borderlands 3. The game itself just came out in September, so maybe it's a matter of running before they could walk, but it means broken grenades and shields, obsolete melee attacks, frozen and crashed games for players. On top of all the ways this game mode breaks according to your loadout and character selection, the loot just isn't that great.

Drops, which only occur after you bring ghost parts to a dinosaur, include Terror Anointed weapons and event cosmetics that just aren't as good as the weapons you've probably already farmed during regular gameplay.

8 BEST: Overwatch: Halloween Terror

Just like last year, Overwatch focuses on Halloween-themed skins, sprays, voice lines, and emotes that you don't need to spend IRL money to access. On top of three epic skins for Junkrat, Baptiste, and Lucio, you can snag five legendary skins for Ana, Ashe, Orisa, Tracer, and Widowmaker. Most cosmetics will be available through loot boxes, but players can also earn the Inferno Junkrat and Vampire Baptiste, as well as the previously BlizzCon Virtual Ticket-exclusive Legendary Demon Hunter Sombra through weekly challenges. And don't worry about gameplay getting stale; each week of the event, there's something new to do and win, so you won't even have time to be bored!

7 WORST: Rainbow Six: Siege: Doktor's Curse

"Doktor's Curse" could have been really good with a few changes. Rainbow players do love a good new gameplay mode, like "Rainbow Is Magic" for April Fool's Day or "Outbreak" during Operation: Chimera. However, "Doktor's Curse" players have experienced some glitches, like dying to hunters while supposedly invisible, that make it hard to enjoy Rainbow's spooky map makeover and truly creepy Halloween costumes for the operators.

Another unfortunate addition to "Doktor's Curse" is the narrator's pretty cheesy tone of voice that's really good at taking players out of their element in the middle of a round.

6 BEST: Apex Legends: Fight or Fright

Not only do nostalgic gamers get to return to King's Canyon fresh off the heels of a new map drop, but their beloved map is also shrouded in darkness, which adds an extra layer of excitement to Apex's classic battle royale-style gameplay. However, instead of going back to the end-game screen, you will join a shadow-squad as an undead version of your character with melee attacks instead of weapons as well as lightning-fast speed. On top of this fun new gameplay, there's a whole collection of new cosmetics to collect for your favorite Legend.

5 WORST: Rocket League: Haunted Hallows

If there was anything less original than rehashing the same type of special event every Halloween since 2017, surely it's the fact that Rocket League can't even come up with an original aesthetic on its own. Instead, the game borrows this year's spooky decorations, aesthetics, and overall idea from the wildly popular Stranger Things instead of thinking up its own ideas.

All of the cosmetics are available to purchase through in-game currency called Candy Corn at the end of every online match, but they only appeal to fans of the TV show it's based on.

4 BEST: Bloodborne: Return to Yharnam

Bloodborne doesn't officially host any kind of special Halloween event, but that's probably what makes the Halloween event the community itself puts on all the better. For the event, every player is encouraged to start with a fresh new character and make the most of Bloodborne's online co-op and PVP game modes. In addition to this, players are encouraged to dress their characters up in their best Halloween costumes. A community event like this is a great way for players to get back into what made them fall in love with Bloodborne in the first place.

3 WORST: Fortnitemares

Fortnitemares didn't start out very smoothly this year. The game offers three different events to engage in for the Halloween season, but one of them is currently closed while Epic addresses an issue.

You can participate in the other two events to kill zombies where Loot Lake used to be (zombies that admittedly aren't very scary) but the only reward you'll get for doing so is the Victory Umbrella. You can earn some free cosmetics during the Halloween event, but as always, the best stuff comes in packs you have to buy.

2 BEST: Killing Floor 2: Grim Treatments

On its own, Killing Floor 2 is sufficiently creepy and gory to help get into the Halloween spirit during October. But the game instead goes all out with a live special event called "Grim Treatments." In addition to freaky makeovers for the Zeds and their bosses, you get to open your arsenal up to tougher weapons designed to take on that boss you've been trying to defeat for a while now—and the weapons you already know and love get a little bit of a boost to make taking down Zeds easier (and let's be honest, more fun).

1  WORST: Grand Theft Auto Online: Halloween Surprise

Here is yet another case of unoriginal Halloween event ideas. GTA V, while a well-beloved game with new content released every couple of months that keep players coming back almost seven years after its original release, this dedication doesn't seem to mean much for Halloweentime. Rockstar treats "Halloween Surprise" like any other update by adding more vehicles, weapons, and outfits, but not much has changed since 2015. "Halloween Surprise" means Slasher-like gameplay, but it always seems to be the same old thing.
