2018 has been quite a year for gaming. Some of the biggest, most popular games have launched this year, especially within the last couple of months. From the still yet to be completed final season of Tell Tale Game’s The Walking Dead, to an updated version of the classic Crash Bandicoot series and Marvel’s Spider-Man swinging into PS4 fan’s systems around the world, this year has been filled with some incredible moments that have created new fandoms and inspired existing ones. In the last month alone we have seen the release of one of gaming’s most eagerly anticipated games in the last decade, Red Dead Redemption 2 from Rockstar Studios.

Yet, with the year nearly at an end, gamers are already looking ahead to the future to see what games they have in store in 2019 and beyond. Thanks to conventions like E3 and Gamescom we have some ideas on what’s to come, and thanks to some internet sleuthing we have an idea on a few others that may be coming to gamers in the near future. Games like the next step in the Halo franchise, to rumors of a new Left 4 Dead zombie apocalypse game from Valve, the rumors, and confirmations of these games are sure to have gamers buzzing over the next year.

28 In Development: The Surge 2

This first game has fans split on whether or not the game deserves a sequel, but it’s coming nonetheless. The sequel to one of gaming’s more contentious series, The Surge 2 continues the hardcore combat and limb targeting system of the first game, all while taking gamers into a new landscape inside a new area known as the Park sector, a section devastated by the Surge. The game is in development and set to release sometime in 2019 on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

27 In Development: The Last Of Us Part II

One of the most beautifully made and wonderfully written games for PlayStation in the last decade has to be The Last of Us.

The sequel to Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed game The Last Of Us Part II has to be one of the most anticipated games in the industry.

While trailers have shown off the gritty yet beautiful gameplay and brutality of the world they built, no release date has been confirmed, while reports suggest mid 2019 as a possible release date.

26 Possibility: Borderlands 3

This game is one Gearbox has been hinting at for a while. While no official word was released at either E3 or SDCC this year, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has hinted at a new Borderlands game several times over the years, and Walmart even accidentally released a slate of new games to anticipate on their website which included Borderlands 3. Fans are eager to see when this game will finally be unveiled. Will we see more of characters like Mad Moxxi or explore the vault once again? Only time will tell.

25 In Development: Halo: Infinite

For those who may not remember how Halo 5: Guardians ended, a mysteriously resurrected Cortana took control of powerful machines known as Guardians and turned the AI across the galaxy against humanity and the covenant, claiming to seek peace through control. Master Chief was unable to save her from herself, and he joined a small band of survivors to plan a way to stop her.

Now news of Halo: Infinite is highly sought after since the teaser trailer released at E3 this year.

Will Master Chief save the galaxy once again? Is that really Cortana, or something far darker? The game is in development, but no release date is yet set.

24 In Development: Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

Set for a March 15th, 2019 release date, Ubisoft’s sequel to the popular Tom Clancy game The Division was a huge hit at E3 this year, showing off an impressive trailer filled with beautiful graphics and amazing action. Set six months after the first game, the game will focus on the nightmarish looking ruins of Washington D.C. as the various factions of survivors come into conflict. Do you have what it takes to work together and survive?

23 Possibility: Bloodborne 2

This game is highly rumored, as the trailer at last year’s game awards from the developers FromSoftware showed off a new game called Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, from the developers of Bloodborne and Dark Souls.

Creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has confirmed he won’t be working on another Dark Souls game.

The rumor is that after this new game’s release he will shift focus to another Bloodborne game. Fans can only hope that the famed creator will return to the franchise they love.

22 In Development: Kingdom Hearts III

The highly anticipated sequel to Square Enix’s Disney and Final Fantasy mashup series is set to release on January 25th, 2019 on Xbox One and PS4. Set to explore the coming war between the light and darkness, the game will feature worlds from movies such as Big Hero 6, Frozen, and Monster’s Inc, among many others, and should conclude the long-told story of the Keyblade hero Sora and his friends as they fight to save Kingdom Hearts.

21 In Development: Metro: Exodus

Fans have gotten plenty of nuclear apocalyptic, mutant-hunting action in the US in the Fallout series. Yet, there is only one series that has explored the Russian nation in the aftermath of one such event, and that is the Metro series.

On February 22nd, 2019, Xbox One, PlayStation 4. and PC fans will be able to play the highly anticipated third game in the Metro series.

Set in a post-apocalyptic future beset with nuclear radiation in Russia (based on a novel), the protagonist Artyom must find a way to survive the apocalyptic wilderness of the country.

20 Possibility: Bully 2

Rockstar Studios is one of the more well-known companies in the industry. While known for games like GTA V and the recently released hit game Red Dead Redemption 2, Bully was one of Rockstar Studios most popular games. Last year, screenshots were leaked online that stoked fan interest in a possible sequel to the popular open-world game set in and around a New England boarding school. While nothing is confirmed, fans are eager to see a return to this cult classic video game.

19 JUST RELEASED: Darksiders III

The return to the apocalypse is upon gamers as the journey of the four horsemen continues in THQ Nordic’s Darksiders series.

The first two games followed horsemen War and Death in their journey to discover who was responsible for the apocalypse starting too soon.

Following the female horsemen Fury, the game will feature the same open world, hack and slash gameplay as she fights to defeat the seven deadly sins and learn more about what happened to the other horsemen. The game is set to release on November 27th, 2018.

18 In Development: Metroid Prime 4

One of Nintendo’s most popular series in the last couple of decades has to be the Metroid series. The space-faring adventure series created the iconic gaming hero Samus. A little over a year ago, Nintendo made an announcement that a new Metroid Prime game was in development for the Nintendo Switch. Other than reports that the development is going well, no release date, plot details or trailer have been released for the game, so this game’s development is quite the mystery.

17 Possibility: Watch Dogs 3

After a successful sequel brought the rocky foundation of the Watch Dog franchise up a notch, gamers have been eager to see a third game in the series.

The open world, futuristic game about hackers taking on a corrupt system (with loose ties to the Assassin’s Creed universe), has become a fan favorite, and subtle hints at a third game have been in the works for a while now.

From an extended cutscene at the end of the second game being added to Ubisoft’s AI companion Sam telling visitors to the site that development is going smoothly, this game seems more and more likely to happen.

16 In Development: The Elder Scrolls VI

This final rumored game is one of gaming’s most anticipated sequels, and although a teaser confirmed the game’s existence, no word on its development stage has been announced.

The long-awaited sequel to the popular franchise The Elder Scrolls, Bethesda teased audiences this year at E3 2018 with a short clip of the title superimposed over a landscape, teasing development of the sequel.

While not much work has begun on the project as it’s set to begin after the development of Starfield, this game is likely to see life in the next couple of years.

15 In Development: Rage 2

It’s time to explore a different kind of apocalypse from Bethesda studios. Rage.

This popular sequel has gained a lot of traction in recent years.

Rage 2 is set for a quarter 1 or 2 2019 release, and the Bethesda game will take place 30 years after the original. The last ranger, Walker, will have to fight to survive in a world overrun by mutants after the planet is hit by an asteroid, and will feature both new and returning characters from the first game.

14 Possibility: Left 4 Dead 3

One fan favorite franchise from Valve has been at the top of everyone’s must make list, and that is Left 4 Dead. While the company is known for making their series end after only two games (plus DLC), a mention of the zombies known as Smokers from the series made its way into a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive patch, leading fans to speculate perhaps the series is not lacking life like the zombies the players must face constantly.

13 Around The Corner: Super Smash Bros: Ultimate

Due out on December 7th of this year, the holiday smash hit Super Smash Bros: Ultimate is sure to keep Nintendo fans busy.

Featuring over 73 character choices (the most in any game in the series so far), the game will include all previous characters from the franchise, as well as new characters like King K. Rool from Donkey Kong and Simon Belmont from the Castlevania series.

There will also be a number of new modes, including a tourney option with rumored to be 32 brackets.

12 In Development: Resident Evil 2

After the release of Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, the highly acclaimed Resident Evil series was due for an update to their long catalog of games, especially older games with a need for updated graphics. That’s where Resident Evil 2 comes in. Another popular zombie survival game, the remake of the popular game will bring updated graphics and gameplay when it hits the Xbox One, PS4, and Windows on January 25th, 2019. It will once again feature Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield fighting to survive a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City.

11 Possibility: Wasteland 3

This next rumored game has a little info known, but nothing has been confirmed.

While very little information is known at this time, the rumor is that a third game in the popular post-apocalyptic, squad based multiplayer series Wasteland is on the way.

Rumored for quarter 4 of the 2019 season, the game would be set in a post-apocalyptic version of Colorado, following the last survivors of a squad known as Team November, and would still feature turn-based action and gameplay.

10 In Development: Gears 5

This game is confirmed to be in development, as a trailer was shown at E3 that fans loved. The game will shift focus away from Marcus Fenix’s son J.D. and to former outsider turned Gear Kait as she explores her family history and her connection to the reemerging Locust. It’s the first time in the series a female protagonist has taken the reigns of the game, making this an exciting new chapter in the franchise.

9 In Development: Psychonauts II

The very popular game Psychonauts is developing a sequel.

The game was developed by Double Fine Productions and studio head Tim Schaefer, who was known for the cult classic game Brutal Legend starring Jack Black as a roadie who travels back in time in an epic rock/fantasy era.

Originally due out in 2018, the game has since been pushed to 2019. Creators Double Fine are continuing the legacy of the hero and psychic who can enter minds and destroy the evil residing in that said mind.
