An army besieging a castle wall may not be as effective as a lone assassin when it comes to dealing with a monarch, which is why Crusader Kings III is giving players more ways to dispose of their enemies through Schemes.

Crusader Kings III is an upcoming grand strategy game that puts the player the role of a leader of a Medieval dynasty who can invade other nations while preventing their own relatives from offing them. Crusader Kings III is a game about controlling armies, building cities, and trying to keep your power-hungry vassals in check, even the ones who happen to be your family members.

Crusader Kings III has implemented a Scheme system, which can be used to target different individuals in order to deal with them in unsavory ways. A new development update on the Paradox Interactive YouTube channel has broken down the different ways in which the Scheme system can be used to tackle foes within the court.

A Scheme (whether it be murder, seduction, or swaying someone to your cause) is linked to a progress bar that has a chance of increasing once a month. The chance of increasing is linked to Owner’s Scheme Power and the target’s Scheme Resistance. These two values can be altered by different factors, such as the Skills of the people involved. Once the progress bar is filled, the Scheme will attempt to execute. If it fails, then there is also the chance that your plot will be uncovered.

There is also the Secrets system, which involves discovering the illegal or frowned upon deeds of other people. It's possible to use a Spymaster to uncover someone's Secret and use it against them as part of the Hooks system. A Hook is essentially a form of blackmail that can be used to force someone to take a course of action, under the threat of revealing their secret. There are two kinds of Hooks, with Weak Hooks being limited to a single use and Strong Hooks having a cooldown timer.

The Hooks, Schemes, and Secret systems offer the player numerous ways to deal with their enemies without sending a single soldier off to war. All of the wannabe Littlefingers of the world will have their chance to bring down entire dynasties with the help of secret schemes next year when Crusader Kings III is due to be released.

Crusader Kings III will be released in 2020.
