If you crank Crysis Remastered's graphics settings right up to their maximum potential, level of detail - or LOD - will effectively be turned off, meaning that texture rendering won't be affected by variables such as distance and movement speed.

This was confirmed during our recent interview with Crytek about Crysis Remastered, during which we discussed everything from how the iconic Can It Run Crysis? meme fares in the office, to the fact that there is currently no graphics card on the market that can run Crysis Remastered at 30fps in 4K on its highest settings.

"We had a meeting five or six months ago," Crysis Remastered project lead Steffen Halbig tells me. "Sometimes we have special meetings only for PC on what we can do to raise the bargain for the PC part."

"I said let’s have a mode included which gives you unlimited view, no pop-up from textures, no changes anymore," Halbig continues. "Normally in a game if you are 50 metres away from a stone, you see a texture change because in the distance it has lower poly to save performance or memory, and when you go closer it looks sharper.

"With [the] Can It Run Crysis [mode] it won’t change, everything looks sharp in the whole game and everything will load instantly. This setting is for the PC gamers out there who want to have this high-end stuff."

Just like the fact that there is no GPU capable of handling Crysis Remastered at 30 fps in 4K on its highest settings right now, the ability to remove level of detail limitations by having constantly rendered textures ensures that Crysis Remastered will have a relatively lengthy lifespan on modern hardware. This rings particularly true for PC, which this mode was specifically designed for.

"It’s future proofed for the next one or two graphics card generations," Halbig tells me. "It’s a gift for PC gamers."
