It’s kind of hard to believe, but the current generation of games started in 2013 when the PS4 and Xbox One were released. Some like to say it started in 2012 when the Wii U came out, but… come on, no it didn’t! I don’t know why, but it feels like those systems came out like two or so years ago, not five! We have gotten the mid-gen systems since then, though, with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. We also got the Nintendo Switch last year to add to the current generation!

Since it’s been five years since those systems launched, that means that there’s been a ton of games come out since then. I would argue that some of the best games ever made have been released since then. I love Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, just to name some. I know that some people think those games are a tad overrated, and that gets us to this list!

This list is going to have some games that have been released over the past five years that I feel are overrated, and some that you may want to check out/go back to. I tend to like most of the games that I play, but I do have some heavy hitters that I feel are praised to a level that people need to chill with. You’ll see that with the first entry. Alright, let’s talk games!

30 Overrated: Bloodborne

via: ign.com

Look, I get that some people consider this game to be their favorite game of all time, and I respect that. I actually really like this game, but it by no means redefined the genre like some say it did. It didn’t make it any easier for new players, and the story is told in such an odd way. It has fast and tight combat that they used to help build the combat in Dark Souls III. I get that people love this game, but I just think it’s a tad overrated, which warranted it 30 on this list.

29 Worth A Second Look: Sunset Overdrive

via: wccftech.com

I had my first job out of college when this game came out, and I was so excited about it that I took the day off. It was so worth it! This game reviewed decently well, and people seemed to like it but it never got that big praise that I feel it deserved.

The style in this game was top-notch.

The graphical style was awesome, the monsters were cool, and the movement was like nothing I’d never played before. It’s on Xbox One Game Pass, so check it out.

28 Overrated: Destiny

via: shacknews.com

This game got a ton of flack after it came out, and it honestly deserved it. I fell in love with it, but I will by no means defend anything outside of the art and gameplay. The story is trash and you could tell they have development problems. It got great when The Taken King expansion came out.

Not releasing on the PC was a mistake, and the initial light system was way too much. The DLC content from The Taken King onward was great, but that was over a year in.

27 Worth A Second Look: Alien: Isolation

via: gamespot.com

I had very high hopes for this game, and man did it ever deliver on them! The people that played it liked it, but it is a very slow-paced horror game and that can turn people off. It captures the feel of the Alien movies in a way that so many games before it tried to. Seeing the Xenomorph for the first time is a gaming moment I’ll never forget! It is a bit too long and can be very tough at times, but if you like horror and/or the Alien movies it’s worth your time to check out.

26 Overrated: Xenoblade Chronicles 2

via: stevivor.com

I honestly respect the Xenoblade games more than I enjoy playing them. I tried to the play the first one on the Wii and tapped out about 10 hours in, and I did the same thing with this one. I just can’t deal with the combat system.

I don’t care for MMO combat, and that’s what this combat style is. The world is impressive and the story seemed pretty solid, but it takes about 100 hours to beat. I know this game is on a short list of must-own Switch games, but not for me.

25 Worth A Second Look: The Order: 1886

via: segmentnext.com

This game had so much hype around it that it’s no wonder that it was a let down when it came out. I get that this is more of a movie than an actual game, but what’s there is pretty solid! It’s still one of the best-looking games on the PS4. The story goes places and ends up being its strongest point. It’s always on sale for dirt cheap when PlayStation has big sales, and it’s definitely worth checking out. Plus, it’s an extremely easy platinum trophy!

24 Overrated: DOOM

via: microsoft.com

The first time I played this game, I really didn’t get what all the hype was about. It came off as just a fast shooter with a really dumb story, and that’s ultimately what it is. I did go back to it though, and liked it much better the second time. But I still don’t get all the hype this game got. I’d much rather play Borderlands 2 again or pump more hours into Destiny 2 than go though this game again. It’s a very solid game with cool music and awesome art, but that’s about it for me.

23 Worth A Second Look: Star Wars Battlefront II

via: polygon.com

I’m not sure a single game has had as much controversy around as this game since this generation started. I’ll say that it did deserve it, but I think there is an amazing game under all that.

All the DLC for this game is free. Since all the microtransactions happened and the bad leveling system has been changed, the content this game has been pumping out has pretty good. They’ve added more characters, new maps/modes, and everything is still free. It’s on sale all the time and it’s really worth looking at again if you haven’t since launch.

22 Overrated: Just Cause 3

via: images.nvidia.com

I got this game when it came out, and I just never understood how people love this series as much as they do. It is cool that you can hook stuff together and it makes literally everything explode, but it can be so over the top that it just becomes boring. The story is there, but man, it’s not the reason to play it. The voice acting is kinda meh. The appeal of this game is flying around in the wingsuit and blowing stuff up. I’ve just always thought this series was overrated.

21 Worth A Second Look: Final Fantasy XV

via: amazon.com

We waited about 10 years for this game, so I get that not everyone was pleased with it. But man, I loved every minute I played of it. The combat system reminded me of Kingdom Hearts, and that’s one of my favorite franchises!

The Royal Edition has all the DLC with it, even. They supported this game with a ton of DLC post-launch. They even went back and added to Chapter 13, which was considered the low point of the game. All the DLC adds to the character development and is worth going back to.

20 Overrated: Titanfall 2

via: origin.com

The main reason I have this game on this list is because of the campaign. I thought it was fun, but not the genre-altering thing that a lot of people seemed to think it was. It had some cool time manipulation sections that were fun, but we saw stuff like that in other games. It was a huge part of BioShock Infinite and was done much better there too. I don’t think this is a bad game by any means, I just thought the campaign was super overrated.

19 Worth A Second Look: Quantum Break

via: thekindland.com

I think this game got a bad rep because of the TV show tied to it. I’ll admit it wasn’t that great, but try and separate that from the game and this is a solid third-person shooter with some awesome powers! I get that this was probably not the game we all wanted out of Remedy (Alan Wake 2, anyone?) but that shouldn’t take away what this game is. It’s on the Xbox Game Pass so give it a download and check it out if you’re a member.

18 Overrated: INSIDE

via: rockpapershotgun.com

I wanted to really like this game! I thought the visuals were amazing and the style of storytelling was clever, if not a bit confusing. It has a surprising ending that I honestly had to look up the meaning to but that’s about it.

It’s short enough to play in one sitting. The actual act of playing this game is just some simple puzzles with some story sprinkled in. I know this game was on a lot of people’s game of the year lists, but I just didn’t agree with that.

17 Worth A Second Look: Fallout 4

via: stereochampions.com

During my first playthrough of this, I was very let down. I didn’t like the building aspect and thought the overall story was lame. I feel like I rushed though it to move on to another game. I replayed it this year and have a totally different take on it. I took my time and did all the side stuff and it’s an amazing game! All the story DLC released is so good, especially Far Harbor. So if you felt like I did the first time, give it another shot and you may change your mind. New Vegas is still my favorite Fallout game, though.

16 Overrated: Forza Motorsport 7

via: news.xbox.com

I used to be a big fan of this series, but as the years have gone by I’ve just lost interest. I mainly put Forza 7 on here because it’s the latest one. They just haven’t done enough to add new and interesting aspects to these games to keep me interested.

I much prefer the Horizon series. I think these games are some of the best looking games this generation, but looking pretty only gets you so far. They are ultimately games and they are lacking fun to me.

15 Worth A Second Look: Dead Rising 4

via: giantbomb.com

Dead Rising 3 was an Xbox One launch title and sold pretty well because of that. I feel that most people overlooked Dead Rising 4, and that’s a shame! It took the engine from the third game and just added to it! Frank West came back and made the story decently interesting because of it. It has a Christmas theme which not a lot of games have. I get that maybe making a fourth game in this franchise came off as a bit much, but it’s a fun game worth checking out if you missed it and liked the other games.

14 Overrated: Mortal Kombat X

via: giantbomb.com

The 9th Mortal Kombat took everyone by surprise with how good the story mode was, and how it changed up the combat. A few years later, Mortal Kombat X came out and, in my opinion, didn’t add enough to get the praise that it did. I by no means think this game is a bad fighting game, but I just wanted an awesome story like in the previous game. The kids in this game were fine but didn’t go as deep as I wanted. It’s a good game, but not an amazing follow-up game.

13 Worth A Second Look: Watch Dogs 2

via: outermode.com

I totally get that a lot of people were let down by Watch Dogs. It was meant to be this true next-gen game that couldn’t be done the previous gen, but it ended up just being an alright open-world game. The second one really changed things up, though, and got close to their original vision.

The city is the star of this game. The hacking feels good, the driving was improved, and the main character had much more personality. It was also just fun to play, and that’s what matters.

12 Overrated: Dying Light

via: playstation.com

I understand that what I’m about to say is a very unpopular opinion, but I prefer the Dead Island games to this game. It’s made by Techland, who developed this game and the Dead Island games. I liked that the Dead Island games barely had a story, and it was just about taking out zombies in an island location. Dying Light is much more story-focused, and I just couldn’t get into it. They are making a sequel, so again, it’s just my opinion that I think this game is overrated.

11 Worth A Second Look: No Man’s Sky

via: microsoft.com

This is going to be the only game on this list that I don’t care for that I think you should give another chance. I give all the credit to Hello Games for not giving up on this game. They did something that only MMO games have done; they completely changed their game and kinda of did a relaunch.

It originally came out in 2016. Pretty much every system has changed, and it feels like an actual game you're playing. You should give it a shot again, even if it still didn’t grab me, but that’s just me.
