Nintendo Switch Online has been around for a while now and has finally introduced a new feature to the subscription service by bringing free SNES games to users. Whether it is likely to bring in any more subscribers is unknown, but to please existing users of the service, Nintendo is offering a discount toward the purchase of a Family Membership for those thinking of upgrading to it.

According to a tweet from Nintendo of Europe, people who own an Individual Membership will be able to upgrade to a Family Membership at a discount. The offer will start on October 1st.

The account tweeted the following:

"Starting 01/10," the tweet begins, "you'll be able to use the remaining days of your #NintendoSwitchOnline Individual Membership as a discount when purchasing a Family Membership!" The tweet adds that, while details are not available now, specifics regarding discount rates and other information will be available on Nintendo's website, presumably between now and October 1st.

It's worth reiterating that Nintendo of Europe was the Twitter account behind the tweet, meaning that the deal may not apply to American Nintendo Switch Online users. However, that seems very unlikely.

Nintendo Switch Online currently has the Individual Membership plan and the Family Membership plan. Under the Individual Membership plan, Switch owners can opt for the 1-month membership for $3.99 USD, the 3-month membership for $7.99 USD, or the 12-month membership for $19.99 USD. Meanwhile, the 12-month Family Membership runs at $34.99 USD and includes all of the benefits provided by the Individual Membership, including access to free NES and SNES games, as well as online play, for eight Nintendo Account users.

While there are no details yet on the discount rates, this sounds like an interesting promotion. The idea of a discounted upgrade if you own an Individual Membership is a very enticing one, given that it expands the benefits of a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to eight users. The devil is always in the details, but this is a smart move by Nintendo and could prove profitable in the long run, especially if Nintendo continues to bring more additional benefits to the service.
