After eight years and three different delays, Cyberpunk 2077 has successfully launched worldwide. It would not be much of a stretch to call Cyberpunk 2077 one of the most anticipated games of the year. As if to prove it, we have learned that Cyberpunk has broken a record on Steam—reaching 1 million concurrent players.

This year was a big year for gaming, breaking records from the biggest PVP event in history, the biggest console launches that Sony and Microsoft have ever had, and the most hours spent watching games on YouTube. It seemed that hardly a month went by without one record or another being broken.

While Cyberpunk 2077 isn't the fastest-selling game ever, it did break a record on Steam. According to DSO gaming, Cyberpunk 2077 is the first first-player game to ever reach 1 million concurrent players—and that was just in the first three hours. To add a little bit of perspective, only three other games have had more than 1 million concurrent players on Steam.

Those titles were PUBG, DOTA 2, and CSGO with 3.25, 1.29, and 1.3 million players respectively. The closest any other game got to 1 million players was Among Us with 447,000. Of course, none of that takes into account other ports like GOG, Xbox, PlayStation, or Google Stadia. All of that being said, it's safe to assume that day-one sales of Cyberpunk were a huge success for CD Projekt Red.

While there are some people out there who hope that the game "dies in a month" it could be that Cyberpunk will stick around for a little while, as there will be free DLC released sometime in "early 2021." Additionally, (as our own Dave Aubrey experienced) there are so many things to see and experience in the game, that you can spend well over 175 hours in-game and not completely finish it.

With recent attacks on streamers from both corporations and the US government, Cyberpunk's togglable copyright protections for content creators could make the game popular fare for streamers and YouTubers for a while as well. Regardless of how long the game remains relevant, though, we know one thing for sure, it's record-breaking performance isn't likely to be taken down any time soon.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available for PC on GOG.COM, Steam and Epic, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Stadia from December 10, 2020. When you buy Cyberpunk 2077 on GOG.COM, 100% of your money goes to CD PROJEKT Group and supports their future projects.
