The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is easy to get lost in. Night City pulls at you with its dense streets and flashing lights, never letting you catch your breath – thanks to the constant use of first-person perspective. But what truly brings the world together is Cyberpunk 2077's soundtrack, one of the best I've heard since Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
GTA: Vice City's soundtrack was so successful because it helped bring the world around you to life. Everything about Vice City screamed the 80s – setting foot into Vice City was like stepping back in time. And a lot of that nostalgia was derived from the game's thoughtfully crafted radio stations. From Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" to Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark at the Moon," the tunes were varied enough to appeal to a wide audience, while staying true to the world Rockstar was trying to build. Whether it was an iconic chart-topper or hidden gem, not a single song felt out of place while running through your speakers.
Fast-forward to Cyberpunk 2077, and it seems CD Projekt Red is taking a page out of the Vice City playbook. Night City's radio stations might not be filled with chart-topping hits, but each song drives home the feeling of restless disobedience – a feeling cultivated throughout Cyberpunk 2077's narrative. Blaring EDM, bombastic punk rock, original tunes from SAMURAI and, well, anything with heavy bass and anti-establishment undertones can be heard as you cruise around the ruined streets of Night City. It won't be everybody's cup of tea but, regardless of your musical preferences, you'll find the soundtrack does much to fully immerse you in this dystopian world.
Whether its Rat Boy's "Who's Ready for Tomorrow" or Run the Jewels' "No Save Point," everything on the radio is meant to get your adrenaline pumping, urging you to run full-speed through a brick wall. It's a far cry from Vice City's soundtrack – but compliments its world in much the same way.
"We wanna provide you with the soundtrack to f***ing sh*t up," said Run the Jewels member, Killer Mike. On that front, Cyberpunk 2077 is a resounding success.
