It's no surprise the world of Cyberpunk 2077 is dark and gritty. These themes are a natural part of any cyberpunk setting. Within Night City, you'll come across quite a few disturbing and strange sights that will play into the overall atmosphere of the game. From freakish advertisements to infamous gangs like the Maelstrom, known for their thirst for violence, anyone looking for a ride into darkness won't be disappointed.

While V doesn't become the subject of too many extremely dark events, there are still quite a few quests and events that might get you cringing and uneasy. Whether it's adult toys turned into deadly weapons or stomach-turning ways to destroy your enemy while in combat, there's no shortage of dark things your V can participate in during their stay in Night City.

9 Allow Mind Control

Cyberpunk 2077 Jefferson Peralez

A cyberpunk setting wouldn't be complete without themes of mind control and brainwashing included, which is why the quest involving Jefferson and Elizabeth Peralez is so interesting despite being dark and eerie. As V is tasked with doing a simple service for them, they'll get contacted later on by Elizabeth when a break-in occurs at the couple's home.

After some digging around, it's clear that the couple is being stalked by an unknown group or entity. V can choose whether or not to reveal that to Jefferson, who's the main victim of the operation and also running for mayor. Not revealing the truth to him is easily one of the evilest things you get to do in the game.

8 End It

Night City is a dark and hopeless place. With everything V has to endure and go through due to the biochip, it's no wonder the atmosphere in Act 3 is dark all around. After being taken to a rooftop area by Misty, you'll have one last chat with Johnny Silverhand about how to proceed next.

V can actually choose to do nothing about anything and instead commit suicide. It's a very tragic and empty ending, one that fits with the incredibly unforgiving landscape of Night City. It's also guaranteed to deeply upset you as you watch the end credits and listen to the messages people left behind for V.

7 Use Different Substances

Cyberpunk 2077 dum dum offering the inhaler

It's no surprise a city like Night City has a real issue with drugs. From glitter to speed, there's just about anything available for civilians, although V only has one chance when they can grab a taste. During Act 1 when you meet Dum Dum within the Maelstrom lair, he'll offer you to have a taste from his inhaler.

The substance use isn't really explored in the game to its full potential and seems to have no long-standing effects on V. Still, it's part of a world where an advertisement for speed can be legally shown on TV.

6 Take Someone's Only Income

Cyberpunk 2077 beat on the brat the glen fight

Beat On The Brat is one the earliest quests V will receive upon talking to coach Fred at their megabuilding. Fred will suggest taking on a bunch of champions in different areas of Night City and competing to become the best. While most of these are pretty straightforward and carry quite a bit of money, the one located at the Glen is a bit unique.

Ruiz, the champion of the Glen, is a Valentino whose girlfriend is pregnant. The car is his only valuable possession. If you win against him, you can take the money and the car from him, leaving him essentially struggling to provide for his unborn child. It doesn't get darker than that.

5 Kill People With An Adult Object

Cyberpunk 2077 jig jig street adult shop

Adult themes are absolutely rampant in a city as obsessed with glamour and violence as Night City. Just one stroll around Jig Jig Street reveals what the main preoccupation of many of the city's inhabitants is. However, the toys sold in Jig Jig's signature adult shop aren't just there to look nice.

These toys can actually be used as melee weapons in combat. There's even one unique weapon that can be discovered upon romancing Meredith Stout at the No-Tell Motel. Just imagine beating someone to death with a toy like this, and you're sure to find yourself disturbed.

4 Give Your Mind To Arasaka

Cyberpunk 2077 arasaka engineer in arasaka ending

One of the many endings of the game is to side with Arasaka, the company that initially created the biochip lodged into your skull. While it might seem logical to have them take over your survival and allow them to do whatever they want with your life, it's also just immensely bleak to know a megacorporation will take ownership of your mind and load it into a chip.

This is made even worse after all the times Arasaka has hurt V, by killing Jackie Welles and by framing V as the killer of Saburo Arasaka. Truly, this is the longer bad ending no matter how you look at it.

3 Hurt Innocent Civilians

Cyberpunk 2077 V shooting from a car

V is a mercenary, which by definition doesn't really mean anything in Night City. Every mercenary is different, and while some are concerned with doing the right thing and applying some degree of justice to their actions, some simply don't care about anything else than money and violence.

At any point in the game, your V can simply point the gun at a civilian and shoot them dead without any reason. Of course, it's not advised unless you'd like the NCPD to relentlessly chase after you. Sometimes, however, casualties happen.

2 Force Someone To Suicide

Cyberpunk 2077 suicide quickhack used on enemy

Quickhacks are a strong skillset for any self-respecting netrunner. They're the best way to deal with a large group of enemies — by confusing and distracting them. However, quickhacks are also wonderful when it comes to assassinating single targets mercilessly and efficiently. It's a clean and quiet approach for stealth builds.

The worst, darkest, and most potent quickhack has to be the suicide quickhack. Essentially, it taps into the implants of your victim and takes control of their mind. You'll watch in real-time as they shoot themselves or slit their own throats —  and maybe even feel bad about it.

1 Crucify A Man

Cyberpunk 2077 Sinnerman quest ending scene

There are already some fan-favorite quests that rank as the most disturbing things people have witnessed in the game, but while V is usually just a spectator to violence and mayhem, there's one quest where they might need to participate.

Sinnerman introduces V to a convict who wants to be crucified alive for a braindance recording. He goes as far as requesting V to be the one to do it, which puts you up close and personal with the sheer pain and suffering of someone being hammered to a cross. Everything about this quest is bound to deeply disturb you, especially since it pushes you to participate.
