Update: Dobly has clarified that although the Xbox Series X|S will have Dolby Vision support for gaming in 2021, no games have been confirmed yet.

If you want to experience Cyberpunk 2077 at its absolute best, you might have to wait a bit. Ray tracing will only be available on Nvidia cards at launch, and now we’re hearing that Dolby Vision won’t be supported until early 2021.

The news comes straight from the source. Dolby tweeted out on Tuesday that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive Dolby Atmos support at launch, but Dolby Vision isn’t coming until later next year.

Dolby Atmos is Dolby’s 3D audio formatting. It provides better surround sound by ensuring that the right sound frequencies get sent to the right speakers, so only low tones get produced by the subwoofer and only high tones get produced by the tweeters. It also ensures that sound is produced correctly no matter what your audio setup, from 7.1 surround to 3D-audio headphones.

Dolby Vision does something similar but with HDR. Dolby Vision formats its output with metadata so that compatible screens know exactly how to implement HDR, ensuring that no colors get so bright they appear blown out of glaring.

So far, the only next-gen console that supports both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos is the Xbox Series X/S. The PS5 has its own proprietary 3D audio technology, and Dolby Vision is just not supported at all. Xbox Series X does a pretty good job of handling HDR even without Dolby Vision, but it’s always best to have the game tell the screen what to do than have the console guess for you.

Cyberpunk 2077 arrives in a week, and CD Projekt Red is already on the warpath ensuring that previews and streamers don't ruin the story for everyone else. A special request was posted yesterday pleading with people lucky enough to get a few days early access to not stream their gameplay in order to avoid spoilers.

The rest of us will just have to wait until December 10 when Cyberpunk 2077 arrives on PS5, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
