The highly anticipated open-world sci-fi role-playing shooter, Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a multiplayer feature, but it's looking like it won't be happening for quite a while after its release. In a couple of tweets, developer CD Projekt Red explained that they do plan on giving the game multiplayer, although they're focusing on single-player features first. Once the game is released in April, the team will focus on free single-player DLC, and then move on to working on a release for multiplayer.

If it's any indication of just how far out we are from a multiplayer mode being ready, CD Projekt Red posted a link to job postings in the same series of tweets, so it's safe to say that we shouldn't hold our breath. The time frame isn't necessarily a bad thing though, and this news is certainly still good news. Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to be a massive, in-depth story-driven game, and the fact that we'll be getting a multiplayer platform at all is pretty exciting.

The delayed release of multiplayer also gives CD Projekt Red a great opportunity to focus on story DLC, a feature that many developers have abandoned. We've recently seen games like Red Dead Redemption 2, with an expansive world and an incredibly compelling story, but Rockstar hasn't announced any plans to create story DLC, which is something that they did so well years ago. Instead, they've focused heavily on Red Dead Online, which has been hit or miss with fans of the main game.

Coming off of the wildly successful The Witcher 3Wild Hunt, CD Projekt Red has built themselves quite the reputation, leading to the massive hype that we see surrounding their next game in Cyberpunk 2077. While The Witcher 3 did not contain any multiplayer, it did have some great story DLC, so it's great to know that we're going to see narrative DLC in Cyberpunk 2077, as well as a chance to look at how the developer will handle the world of multiplayer.

Cyberpunk 2077 promises a story and world that is widely open to player's decisions, ensuring that no play-through is quite like the other. That, along with an insanely cool dystopian setting, and a guest appearance from actor Keanu Reeves, promises that the game will be just as memorable as we're all hoping for. Cyberpunk 2077 is due out on April 16th of 2020, with free single-player content releasing soon after and a multiplayer mode... at some point.
