Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most hyped up games of 2020 and, for most players, the game hasn't lived up to it. While CD Projekt Red has done a good job of weeding out the bugs and glitches, many gamers still have a negative attitude toward the game.

After several patches and updates, as well as a next generation update, Cyberpunk 2077 is now in a state the developers and many fans are somewhat happy with. The game has a unique story and a vast, depth filled setting, but some players may make mistakes venturing into Night City for the first time.

Updated March 27, 2023 by Grant Burton: If you're trying out Cyberpunk 2077 just now, you couldn't have picked a better time for it. After many fixes, the game is in a much more solid state than it was when it first launched. We've updated this list to include a few more mistakes first-time players often make.

16 Stick To One Weapon Type

A yellow weapon in Cyberpunk 2077

You may stumble upon a great iconic weapon early in your Cyberpunk 2077 journey, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick with it for the entire game. There are four different weapon types in Cyberpunk: melee, power, smart and tech.

Each weapon type is made up of multiple weapons that are worth using. Seriously, the game is loaded with solid legendary weapons you need to collect, so if you want to try them all, you can’t be stubborn. After all, they say variety is the spice of life.

15 Never Turn These Graphical Options On

Cyberpunk 2077 graphic settings screen

Cyberpunk 2077 notoriously released with many bugs and glitches, as well as high graphical demands across all platforms. Even with the updates, there are some settings and options that should never be turned on.

Settings such as chromatic aberration, film grain, motion blur and depth of field should be switched off. These settings might add some minimal style to the visuals, but they also hamper performance a little bit too. Additionally, fog and cloud detail can be turned down, helping performance a little more.

14 Avoid Text Messages

The phones of Cyberpunk 2077

When playing Cyberpunk 2077, you’re constantly getting text messages from all kinds of people about all kinds of things. It usually gets to the point where you get so many messages, you just don’t have the time to look at them anymore. That’s a big mistake.

While it may be annoying to take some time out of your gameplay to read messages, some of them are triggers for side quests while others may be about a vehicle for sale. While you can quickly get tired of receiving text messages, they’re occasionally worth a gander.

13 Leave Missions Unfinished

Cyberpunk 2077 mission screen

Cyberpunk is full of tasks, missions and activities to partake in. Many of them have you infiltrating or killing, driving or stealing. There are also some multipart, multi-branching missions that don't always share the same name.

These missions should never be avoided or left unfinished. You might get asked to visit a task giver, resulting in either a reward, or a detailed conversation. You won't reap the benefits if you avoid these seemingly tedious or pointless tasks.

12 Stay Away From Junk

Littered Streets in Cyberpunk 2077

There’s junk all over the place in Night City and, while it all might seem useless initially, that’s definitely not the case. It can be quite tedious to look through every little nook and cranny, but it’s a good way to collect junk.

This junk can be used to craft components and, for those of you not into crafting, it can be sold at a vendor for some easy eddies. Whatever the case may be, it’s a good idea to loot everything you see because you’ll never know when you need it.

11 Spread Your Points

Cyberpunk-2077 skill tree screen

The skill and ability tree in Cyberpunk 2077 can be daunting and intimidating at first glance. You might be tempted to spread your available points around to try a bit of everything on offer. This can hinder your gameplay though.

Focusing your points into specific skills and areas will speed up your attempts at getting the better skills and abilities. The cooler, more beneficial skills and abilities can take a lot of points to get to. Not focusing your points will result in grinding later in the game to earn XP to get these skills and abilities, as well missing out on some of the best gameplay elements and mechanics.

10 Leave Intelligence Alone

The Intelligence Skill Tree in Cyberpunk 2077

With all the focus in Cyberpunk 2077 on weapons and vehicles, players often forget the whole hacking side of the game. It’s a good idea to place some attribute points into intelligence as it will make everything easier for you. With new hacks at your disposal, your stealth will improve and so will your damage.

Another reason to improve your intelligence attribute is access points. These access points are located all throughout the world and can be an easy way of making eddies. Any skills that have to do with datamining are worth putting points into.

9 Spend Your Eddies

Cyberpunk 2077 money found in the game

A lot of Cyberpunk is about earning money. Or stealing it. You might be tempted to spend any and all money you get on new weapons, clothes or cars. This could however backfire.

Certain missions require you to spend money. Whether it be to buy something, to bribe someone, or because you owe someone money. There are also story driven events that result in a loss of money. Not to mention the more expensive vehicles, gear, weapons and clothes you can get from saving money.

8 Reject The Ripperdocs

A ripperdoc in Cyberpunk 2077

All around Night City are ripperdocs, and they’re the best source of cyberware upgrades. At first, you probably won’t be using them much since they won’t offer anything interesting other than cyberdeck upgrades, which causes some players to completely forget about them.

You’ll find some cyberware as you do missions, but the best gear will always be available at your ripperdoc near the end game. Anything from a higher jump to a double jump and some unique arm upgrades can be bought from a ripperdoc. Unlike visits to the doctor in real life, you’ll actually want to visit your ripperdoc in Cyberpunk 2077.

7 Stick To One Vehicle

A car in Cyberpunk 2077

There are a lot of vehicles in Cyberpunk 2077. You start off with one, you can steal others, and buy new ones. Your contacts will also try and sell their old ones too. Bottom line, there are ample ways of getting vehicles.

However, you might be tempted to stick to just one. Don't. When a vehicle gets damaged or destroyed, you have to pay for it. If you don't, it stays broken, and you have no vehicle. Having more than one vehicle on hand is therefore pretty beneficial. It also adds some variety in style, speed and handling. If you have no problem stealing generic, basic cars passing by, this is a non-issue for you.

6 Wait To Get Mantis Blades

When it comes to cyberware, the coolest piece has to be the Mantis Blades. They allow you to deal some massive melee damage when you get up close and personal. Visit your ripperdoc occasionally to see if they’re selling Mantis Blades. They won’t be cheap, so you’ll need a good amount of eddies.

There are many things you should know about Mantis Blades and they’re an absolute blast to have as they essentially act as a third weapon. You can have your primary weapon, your secondary weapon and your mantis blades. That’s a ridiculous arsenal of weapons, giving you an edge in any fight.

5 Do The Harder Missions

Once the map of Night City starts to open up, you'll notice many icons. Many of which are missions or tasks. You'll also notice they have risk levels. Avoid the tougher ones.

The risk and danger doesn't always reflect the difficulty. Sometimes these higher risk missions require certain skills or attributes to complete. Skills and attributes not available early on. Your methods of success and possible approaches will therefore be limited. You might not be able to access certain containers, computers or opportunities, hindering your attempts.

4 Stick To Night City

While the majority of Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in and around Night City, that doesn’t mean you have to stay in the city the whole time. There’s a lot to explore in the outskirts, better known as the Badlands.

These areas are full of nomads and there are some good eddies to be made outside the city. Panam Palmer’s group, the Aldecaldos, are nomads and one of the groups V can work with in the game. It’s easily one of the best questlines in Cyberpunk 2077.

3 Fast Travel Everywhere

Cyberpunk 2077's Night City at nighttime

While fast traveling is a very effective way to go from point A to point B, it’s definitely not the best way. The map in Cyberpunk 2077 is not as big as it looks, so it might be a good idea to drive everywhere. This way, if you notice a fight break out on the street or want to help someone, you can get involved.

It’s difficult to immerse yourself in a game when you’re just fast traveling from one place to another. To really get the best Cyberpunk 2077 experience, try to reduce your fast traveling as much as possible. More fast travel points will become available as you explore too, making traversal across Night City easier and quicker the more you play and explore.

2 Do Only The Main Quest

Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077

As amazing as Johnny Silverhand is, it’s probably a good idea to leave the main quest for last. It means you won’t see Keanu Reeves do his thing as often as you’d like, but there are plenty of great side quests that are worth doing, so you should avoid rushing through the main quest.

Not only will you get new and improved gear from doing side quests, you’ll also get to meet some new characters. There are so many memorable characters in Cyberpunk 2077, so go out there and find them.

1 Be Overly Aggressive

A player being aggressive in a gunfight in Cyberpunk 2077

There are many ways to deal with an engagement in Cyberpunk 2077. Sure, you can run in guns blazing, or you can go in stealthily. It’s important to try and figure out how you want to get the job done. As fun as it is to be aggressive, it requires a bit more thinking to do things quietly.

Plus, if you upgrade your intelligence and have a sufficiently large cyberdeck, you can find all kinds of ways to surprise your enemies. It can also be a good way to try out some new weapons and methods of combat in the game. No one likes a one-trick pony.
