It has been four years since Cyberpunk 2077 has said anything on Twitter, but last Wednesday we heard the first sign of life from the game since releasing a trailer in 2013.

If you’re a fan of cyberpunk, the genre that imagines our near future in technologically wondrous but societally bleak ways, then you had few options when it came to games. There’s the Deux Ex franchise, perhaps the greatest set of cyberpunk games ever made, and there’s a host of indie games like Shadowrun, Dex, and Satellite Reigns, but you’re never going to see nearly as many entries into cyberpunk as you would, say a World War II shooter.

Cyberpunk 2077 aimed to change all that and get the world back in love with cyberpunk. Set in a fictional city in the year 2077 (obv) players will explore a neon-loaded metropolis filled with flying cars, deadly cyborgs, and more technology inspired by Ghost In The Shell than you can shake your useless meatbag fists at.

The trailer was released in 2013 during an era where CD Projekt Red was hard at work on The Witcher 3, which went on to become one of the best games of 2015. Despite the fact there was virtually no game attached to it, the trailer won several awards, including Best Trailer at the 2013 Machinima Gaming Awards, Best Animation at the 2013 FITC Awards, and earned a nomination at the 2013 Golden Trailer awards.

And then basically nothing from the game for four years. Oh sure, we got the occasional article from various outlets convincing everyone that the developers were still hard at work and this game was very much still alive, but basically nothing was released for four years.

Now, the developer’s silence on this game is understandable, given that they’re apparently working on some very boring stuff like developing tools and a brand new game engine to power this beast, but that’s a long time to not even tease a screenshot.

And then, on January 10, 2018, the Cyberpunk 2077 tweeted a single word: “beep”.

Not even a word - just a sound, in fact, a sound that at once hilariously tells us the game isn’t dead by evoking the sound of a heart monitor but also announces the company will soon have something to show for all their hard work.

Hold on to your meat parts, since Cyberpunk 2077 is on its way.
