Cyberpunk 2077 is going to have more than just a main quest. There will also be additional side quests and street stories.

Like with most games, the main quests take priority. However, in the developer spotlight, CDPR quest design coordinator Philipp Weber noted that the game will not be linear. Not all of the main quests need to be completed to get through the game. It is important to keep in mind that quests that aren’t necessarily needed still have a lot of important information that could otherwise be missed.

The other quest options are also optional. They can intertwine with or be even bigger than the main quests, or be really short. The purpose of them is to show stories that may not have an exact place in Cyberpunk 2077’s main route. It’s also a way to introduce “a new theme to the game, or telling the story of a specific community or location.”

The street stories are described as being like “monster hunting for a witcher like Geralt.” It’s basically jobs that the player gets assigned and it helps build more street cred, and therefore, a larger reputation. The jobs will range in how much it benefits the player. They can also require pretty unique and creative solutions so that it appeals to many different playstyles.

When asked, Weber said that side quests have the potential to continue the main quest or even set up a completely new branch in the main storyline. Anything the player does can have a possible impact on the main story. Characters that fans may come across side quests for can show up in the main story because they interacted with them. Weber said that it’s totally worth trying out every quest just to see the effects they may have.

Luckily, the consequences for failing a quest doesn’t seem too bad. Part of the game's design philosophy is "not to have a game over screen other than player death.” In other words, the game offers other solutions so that quests can be continued even if a huge mistake was made. Technically, the main quest can't be failed either. However, since choices matter in the game, a wrong pick can feel like a failure.
