Cyberpunk 2077 topped PS4's digital chart last month despite PlayStation recommending it still not be played on a base console.

After six months of waiting, rumors, and endless questions to CD Projekt Red, Sony finally allowed Cyberpunk 2077 to return to the PS Storefront in June. However, Cyberpunk's return came with a caveat. A recommendation from PlayStation that the game not be played on a PS4 and only those planning on playing it on a PS4 Pro or a PS5 should go ahead and give it a first try or a second chance.

It seems a great number of PS4 owners decided to ignore PlayStation's advice and dive in anyway. That's judging by PlayStation's digital download charts for the month of June. Cyberpunk 2077 tops the bill in both North America and Europe. It beat GTA 5 to the top spot in the former, and stopped FIFA 21 taking the crown in the latter despite the game's popularity peaking during Euro 2020.

What makes Cyberpunk's position at the tops of both charts even more impressive is the date on which its PS Store ban was rescinded. June 21. That gave the game just nine days to be downloaded more times than any other PS4 game for the entire month. No recent releases such as Knockout City or Chivalry 2 even came close.

The team at CDPR will have breathed a huge sigh of relief when Sony gave them the green light to return to PlayStation's storefront. Not only because it clearly seems people were clamoring to get their hands on a digital copy of the game, but also because its success was hampered on other platforms. The week it returned to the PS Store, its physical sales increased by 374% week-on-week in the UK.

Cyberpunk's road to redemption is far from over, but CDPR is well on its way. The studio continues to hit the game with patches and updates, one of which fixed 500 of the game's problems earlier this year. Cyberpunk's roadmap may not look the way CDPR envisioned when the game launched, but at least it still has one, and perhaps it can still go on to become the game everyone hoped it was going to be.
