Daedalic Entertainment has recently announced its upcoming The Lord of the Rings game, which will focus on Gollum's story.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was all about unlikely heroes, with four hobbits going on an adventure that pitted them against some of the evilest beings in Middle-earth. It seems that there will be a Lord of the Rings video game with the unlikeliest hero of all, as Gollum will be starring in his own upcoming title.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will let players wear the loincloth of the titular creature in the days before he encountered Frodo Baggins. According to the Hollywood ReporterDaedalic Entertainment was able to reach an agreement with Middle-earth Enterprises in order to produce an action-adventure game starring the villainous Gollum.

The events of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will take place after Sméagol acquires the One Ring but before the events of Fellowship of the Ring, which was when he was captured by agents of Mordor and tortured for information about Bilbo Baggins. It's possible that the game will also include Gollum's scene from The Hobbit where he loses the One Ring to Bilbo.

Daedalic Entertainment is a company that is best-known for games based around storytelling and it seems like The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be no exception, as the player will constantly be dealing with the two voices in Gollum's mind and will occasionally have to side with one of them in order to progress. Carsten Fichtelmann of Daedalic Entertainment explained how they were able to acquire the Lord of the Rings license.

“Our goal was to present a storytelling experience. About four years ago, I caught Middle-earth Enterprises in Berkeley, maybe like Peter Jackson did 20 years ago, and I said we’re interested in licensing Lord of the Rings,” Fichtelmann says of the formation of the partnership. "After some negotiations, it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years."

There are numerous different characters in The Lord of the Rings series who would make for an excellent video game protagonist, so it seems odd that Daedalic has settled on Gollum, who is only really suited for the stealth genre. Gollum isn't a warrior or a wizard, like many other characters in the story and he has no combat skills to speak of, which means that players will have to be mindful of their actions.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is due to be released for PC and other consoles in 2021.
