The mech game from Armored Core producer Kenichiro Tsukuda Daemon X Machina, is on its way to Nintendo Switch next week. Back in February, Marvelous released a demo for the game titled "Prototype Missions." While decent, many players had a number of criticisms, ranging from the lock-on system to the frame rate. Now, the company has released a new demo to showcase all the various improvements to the title.

The new demo features the first six missions of the game. In addition, there are two non-story missions, so altogether the demo has eight stages to complete. Daemon X Machina's story takes place after AIs begin to take over the world. To combat the robotic menaces, certain individuals are given mech suits called Arsenals to fight back against the AIs. You are a rookie mercenary tasked with destroying the AIs and defending the Earth. The demo was fighting an uphill battle after the lukewarm response of Prototype Missions. Thankfully, it looks like Marvelous has answered all fan complaints.

A Robust Customization

The first order of business when starting up the demo is customizing the character. You can be a male or female pilot, and alter skin color, eyes, face tattoos, etc. The suit can be customized with three layers of color, ensuring the character has a unique design. Customization will also play heavily into the Arsenal. Like the suit, you can give the Arsenal different paint applications. As you progress through the game, you will unlock decals and patterns. All in all, Daemon X Machina has great customization options.

Seamless Mech Action

Enough about cosmetics; let's talk about the gameplay. Armored Core has a lot of dedicated fans, but many people agree the gameplay of the older titles feels clunky today. Daemon X Machina is an accessible gateway into the mech action genre, and the new demo perfectly showcases that.

The Arsenal controls wonderfully. To make the learning process simple, the game wisely introduces the controls gradually. The first mission is about getting acquainted with the Arsenal. You can jump, hover, and dash. One of the biggest improvements from Prototype Missions is the lock-on. Upon getting close to enemies, the lock-on will automatically appear, making firing at enemies easy and satisfying. You can also attack the enemy with a melee attack if desired.

The second mission introduces missiles into the action. Upon locking-on and seeing the numbers, you can fire a barrage of missiles upon enemies. It's satisfying and powerful. Now, while most enemies can be defeated pretty quickly, you are not invincible. Thankfully, the area has a destructible container that turns into a temporary health zone. Thus, the battles can require a certain level of strategy.

Needs A Better Script

Daemon X Machina may not be as story-driven as Astral Chain based on the demo, but there is dialogue in-between missions, as well as during combat. Some of it is fun, but sometimes it's laughably bad. Gargantuan and Abyss are two characters with horrid dialogue. The problem is that a lot of these characters have one-dimensional personalities. Based on the demo, the game's script is severely lacking. Also, it's hard to pay attention to the dialogue while in combat. Still, the reason why one would play this game is for the mech gameplay, and that is where Daemon X Machina shines.

Looks To Be Worth The Purchase

Daemon X Machina has great potential. Based on the demo, the game is perfectly accessible for newcomers to the mech action genre. Controlling the Arsenal is seamless, and destroying enemies is satisfying. It remains to be seen if the missions will have enough variety to avoid becoming monotonous. So far, the missions have had enough variety to avoid this pitfall. The story has a great concept and a few decent characters. Sadly, the script can fall under generic or laughable. It shouldn't hinder the great gameplay experience though. We'll see if the rest of Daemon X Machina is as good as the demo, but it's looking promising.

Daemon X Machina will be released on September 13 for Nintendo Switch.
