Back in 2003, Marvel was on track to release an open-world Daredevil game for PS2, PC, and Xbox, but the game was ultimately shelved and fans never got to see much of the Devil of Hell's Kitchen in video game format.
Now, 17 years later, PtoPOnline's Andrew Borman has leaked unseen footage from the PC build of Daredevil. The title includes characters such as Kingpin, Bullseye, and Elektra, as well as locations like the streets of Hell's Kitchen and a boxing arena, referencing the protagonist’s nickname Battlin' Jack Murdock.
Borman says the build is a bit rough, but fans get a glimpse of the dangers Daredevil faces, such as falling from tall buildings or grinding on electrified rails. It is assumed the developers would have given Murdock the ability to swing from his Billy club, as seen in the comics or the Netflix series. It is also expected that the game would have featured Black Widow, Daredevil's former love interest, in some capacity.
Daredevil was reportedly scrapped as a result of conflict between Sony and Marvel, which arose as the former was getting ready to release the Ben Affleck-led Daredevil film and the latter was developing Spider-Man.
The game was set to be developed by 5000ft Inc, an indie developer in Reno, Nevada that has produced Stacked with Daniel Negreanu, Army Men: World War - Team Assault, and Army Men: Green Rogue. The studio was recruited after game publisher Encore bought the rights to several Marvel properties, including Daredevil and Captain America.
A GameBoy Advance version based on the Ben Affleck film was released later that year, but the hero has yet to appear in a main role in a video game. However, he can be seen in other games, such as Fortnite and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2.
The future of the character is a bit up in the air. Netflix canceled its Daredevil series after three seasons in 2018 despite good reviews — although a young Matt Murdock briefly appears in 2018's computer animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
