FromSoftware's Soulsborne titles are known for their challenging, rewarding gameplay and interesting online mechanics, and Dark Souls 3 is no different. While there are many ways to interact with other Ashen Ones in Lothric, nothing is quite as exciting as getting invaded by another player and having to duel them.

In contrast, being the invader is equally exciting and allows you to be an unwanted obstacle for other players. However, to invade others in Dark Souls 3, you must complete a few tasks that can be rather hard to stumble upon and missed entirely by even the more observant players.

The Setup

Getting the Red Eye Orb in Dark Souls 3 takes some setup before getting to the complete steps. To get the Red Eye Orb, you will first get the Lift Chamber Key from Ringfinger Leonhard. However, as you could have guessed, getting the Lift Chamber Key from Leonhard also has steps that need to get completed.

There are two methods of getting Ringfinger Leonhard to appear in the Firelink Shrine. The first method is by lighting the Tower on the Wall bonfire, and the other is by defeating Vordt of the Boreal Valley. Fortunately, both are doable early in the game and shouldn't pose much of a challenge.

After completing one of those two steps, head back to Firelink Shrine, find Ringfinger Leonhard leaning against Lothric's throne, and talk to him. After exhausting his dialogue, Leonhard will give you five Cracked Red Eye Orbs, signaling you are ready to move onto the following steps.

Pale Tongue

The player look at a fire Demon wielding a giant axe in Dark Souls 3

After receiving the Cracked Red Eye Orbs, head to the Undead Settlement and make your way toward the lift room that leads to the Road of Sacrifices. Once in there, send the lift down and immediately get off of it, remaining on the same floor you entered on. If done correctly, another lift should come down for you to step on that will take you upwards.

After riding the lift to the top, reactivate it, start taking it back down, and watch for wooden scaffolding in the middle of the structure. Roll off the lift and onto the scaffolding and proceed outside. You should see a giant fire Demon patrolling a small area below you. Head towards the Demon and start attacking it, which should prompt your trusty onion knight friend Siegward of Catarina to come to your aid.

After successfully slaying the Demon, head to the back left corner of the arena and look for hanging bodies. One of the bodies should have a glowing white orb on it, signifying it has an item. Walk up the debris beside it and hit the body with a melee weapon to knock it down and retrieve the Pale Tongue.

Lift Chamber Key

Curse-rotted Greatwood boss in Dark Souls 3 - A giant tree with limbs branching out of its pustule filled body.

After successfully obtaining the Pale Tongue, head back to the Undead Settlement and do one of two things. The first thing you can do is light the Cliff Underside bonfire, while the second is defeating the Curse-rotted Greatwood boss. Whichever you decide to do, head to the Firelink Shrine upon completion.

When returning to the Firelink Shrine, head to Lothric's throne to find Ringfinger Leonhard leaning against it once more. Talk to him again, with the Pale Tongue in your possession, and exhaust his dialogue. Ringfinger Leonhard will give you the Lift Chamber Key during this dialogue exchange, allowing you to move on to the final step.

Red Eye Orb

Darkwraith enemy in Dark Souls 3 - A skeleton in a black hood and cape

With the Lift Chamber Key in your possession, head to the Tower on the Wall bonfire. From there, head down the steps and to the opposite end of the room from the enemy archer. Unlock the door with the Lift Chamber Key and proceed into the room.

Once in the Lift Chamber, take the lift down to find a Darkwraith standing by itself in a small room. Defeat the Darkwraith to receive the Red Eye Orb, a permanent version of the Crack Red Eye Orbs Leonhard granted you earlier.

Uses Of The Red Eye Orb

The Red Eye Orb allows you to invade a Host of Embers' world as a dark spirit. You can only invade players who have yet to defeat the boss in the area you are currently in and cannot invade players at a certain Soul Level below you (typically in a 90% range if you are below level 351). However, if you are Soul Level 351+, you are limited to other SL 351+ players.

Furthermore, you can only use the Red Eye Orb in locations that have bosses. Meaning, you will not be able to use it at Firelink Shrine or a few other areas considered "safe areas." Unlike the first Dark Souls, this item is not tied to a Covenant, allowing you to use it freely with any of the nine Covenants in the game.
