Elden Ring releases on January 21, 2022. However, you can fill that Dark Souls shaped hole in your heart via a fan-made sequel of the original game. Dark Souls: Nightfall will launch on December 21, 2021.

“Nightfall is a direct fan-made sequel to Dark Souls, with a new story, new characters and bosses, new world map (built mostly from the existing pieces), and much more,” according to the game’s website. “It’s basically a brand new Souls game built using the Dark Souls engine and assets. Combat will be faster-paced, against a mixture of familiar and unfamiliar foes, with brand new voiced NPCs and side-quests. Nightfall also takes many cues from the design of Majora’s Mask, one of my favorite games.”

The project is the culmination of work put in by a number of developers who started the project back in 2019. The larger team was formed over 2020 and the first preview of the game was released in February of this year. Developer Grimrukh has been documenting the developmental process on their Twitter handle.

Funnily enough, the website stated that the team would not want the release of Dark Souls: Nightfall to clash with Elden Ring, which leads us to believe that the project’s release date was finalized after the game’s reveal during the Summer Game Fest by Geoff Keighley.

The Nightfall mod will be exclusive to Dark Souls: Remastered, and will be single-player only. Furthermore, it will also prevent the game from connecting with its servers so that players don’t face any issues for using the mod. The team hasn’t revealed much more about Dark Souls: Nightfall, we’ll have to wait till the end of the year to die again.

While this mod is an unofficial, fan-made sequel to Dark Souls, George R.R. Martin has called Elden Ring an official sequel. He claimed that not only did the game look like it belonged to the Dark Souls series, but it actually does. "The game is called Elden Ring and it's a sequel to a video game that came out a few years ago called Dark Souls," he stated, "My work on it was actually done years ago. These games, they're like movies, they take a long time to develop.”
