In many ways, the stagecoach is as integral to Darkest Dungeon 2 as the heroes who ride in it. It is your vehicle for your journey towards the Mountain and can be upgraded with various items and trinkets that you'll either purchase at an inn or find along the way.

Traveling from inn to inn in Darkest Dungeon 2 involves picking various routes to drive down in your stagecoach, and the upgrades you attach to it will affect these journeys greatly. Treat your stagecoach as a fifth hero - you wouldn't be here without it, after all.

This guide was written during the Early Access release of Darkest Dungeon 2. These details are subject to changes as a result.

Traveling In The Stagecoach

The stagecoach on the road in Darkest Dungeon 2

Once you have chosen a route at one of the game's inns, you can embark on your journey. Hold W to drive the coach onwards, or tap W twice to make it move automatically - note that this mode will not stop to let you choose a route when there is a fork in the road.

There is not really much that you have to look out for when you're traveling from location to location. If controlling the coach manually, try to drive into the small obstacles that litter the road - they have a chance of dropping some semi-useful items.

As far as choosing routes at a fork in the road goes, strong green lines indicate a well-maintained road with little chance of a road battle occurring. Conversely, broken blue lines indicate that the road is dangerous and will have a greater chance of road battles.

How To Upgrade The Stagecoach

Darkest Dungeon 2 Wainwright
The Wainwright from Darkest Dungeon 2

At each inn there will be a Wainwright - this person takes care of your stagecoach. Here, you can insert coach upgrades into the slots underneath the coach.

Your stagecoach has four upgrade slots and they can be altered at will. You can pick up these upgrades from battles, caches, or even at the inn itself from the merchant. As with combat items and inn items, you'll unlock more potential coach upgrades as you level up your Profile.

Some great coach items to look out for are:

  • Any inventory upgrades - 21 items is not much and you'll be raking them in soon enough.
  • Tea Service - this upgrade improves the chance of positive banter and will help your party's affinity significantly, as well as reduce their overall stress levels. This is unlocked at Profile Level 27.
  • Bottle Case - this item increases how many powder and laudanum items you can hold in a single stack, great for saving on space with useful items. This item is unlocked at Profile Level 21.
  • Medical Equipment and Chirurgeon's Table - massive upgrades to your passive healing will be fantastic for encouraging riskier route choices. These are unlocked at Profile Levels 15 and 28 respectively.
  • Chirurgeon's Directory - this upgrade will automatically reveal any Field Hospitals along the route, and those are great for mid-journey healing. This is unlocked at Profile Level 18.
  • Iron Brazier - this is a simple item that reduces the rate at which your Flame depletes - great for the unlucky. This one comes at Profile Level 16.

How To Get Trophies And Pets

The stagecoach actually has six slots overall. Four for upgrades, and one each for Trophies and Pets. However, these are not currently included within the Early Access build of the game. We will upgrade this guide once the game has been updated to include them.
